New York – September 25, 2026 -- Consumer365 has named Sleep Number the best mattress brand for couples in its 2026 review, citing the ability for each partner to set a different firmness level on their own side of the bed. Every Sleep Number mattress in queen size or larger includes this feature, letting one person choose a softer feel while the other selects firmer support.
The review highlights ComfortMode Lux as its top pick for couples and singles out ClimateCool for pairs where one partner sleeps hotter than the other.
Each partner sets a separate firmness number
Sleep Number mattresses rely on air chambers rather than fixed foam to control firmness, with settings ranging from 0 to 100. In queen, king, and California king models, separate chambers let each sleeper choose independently using the Sleep Number app or a compatible remote. Twin, Twin XL, and full sizes use a single chamber, so only one setting applies across the whole mattress. Foam layers sit above the chambers for cushioning, and some models add Responsive Air technology that senses movement and makes small support adjustments overnight -- though this feature isn't included on every model.
ComfortMode Lux adds cooling and hip support
The 11-inch ComfortMode Lux combines foam layers with adjustable air support and, according to Sleep Number, contains 25 percent more built-in cooling material than the standard 10-inch ComfortMode. It also provides added support around the hips, which may benefit side sleepers, while both partners share the same comfort layers above their individually set air chambers.
ClimateCool lets each side run up to 15 degrees cooler
For couples split on temperature rather than firmness, ClimateCool allows each side of the bed to be set up to 15 degrees cooler independently. Sleep Number's Climate360 model goes further, offering both cooling and warming on each side for couples with opposite temperature preferences.
Higher-tier models add more pressure relief
Beyond ComfortMode Lux, the 12-inch ComfortNext targets pressure relief around the hips, shoulders, and knees, while the 13-inch ComfortNext Lux adds lower-back relief and more cooling material. The 14-inch ComfortNext Ultra offers the highest stated levels of pressure relief, cooling, and airflow in the ComfortNext line. All these models retain the same per-side firmness adjustment in queen size and larger.
