NIPOZZANO, Italy – October 21, 2026 -- Marchesi Frescobaldi's Mormoreto 2023 Toscana IGT, a Tuscan red from Castello Nipozzano, is now available in the United States for the first time. The wine blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese.
The Cru dates to a 1983 first vintage
The Frescobaldi family first planted Cabernet and Petit Verdot at Nipozzano more than 150 years ago, aiming to create a great wine that could stand among the estate's best. That ambition produced the first vintage of Cru Mormoreto in 1983. Since 2013, a small amount of Sangiovese has been added to the blend for extra elegance and a link to Tuscan roots.
Chianti Rufina's hills shape the vineyard
Castello Nipozzano sits in the hills of Chianti Rufina. Mormoreto's vineyard lies about 300 metres above sea level, with southwestern exposure and sandy soils. According to the producer, these conditions contribute to the wine's structure, freshness and aromatic complexity.
A mild, rainy start and a hot summer defined 2023
The 2023 season opened mild and rainy, then turned to intense summer heat. Strong water reserves helped the vines withstand the warmer months, and cooler temperatures in late July supported balanced ripening. Frescobaldi describes the result as a vintage of depth, elegance and harmony.
Eighteen months in French oak precede bottle aging
The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected before fermentation. The wine then aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, followed by additional bottle aging for greater balance and integration.
Tasting notes point to blackberry, cardamom and coffee
In the glass, Mormoreto 2023 is an intense ruby red with violet highlights. Aromas of blackberry, raspberry and blackcurrant mingle with liquorice, cardamom, cocoa and coffee. On the palate it is broad and concentrated, with silky tannins and a long, persistent finish.
