MINNEAPOLIS – November 05, 2026 -- Every dollar donated to the American Academy of Neurology's new year-end giving campaign goes directly to brain research, the organization announced on Nov. 4, 2026. The tax-deductible gifts support the AAN Research Program, which backs researchers working on new treatments and cures for brain diseases and disorders.
Demand for grants outpaces what the AAN can fund
Hundreds of researchers apply for AAN grants. The AAN invested nearly $1.8 million in 2026, yet millions of dollars in viable neuroscience research went unfunded.
AAN Chief Executive Officer Mary E. Post said, "We know that excellent research proposals go unfunded." She said the organization wants enough funding to support work that may eventually lead to a cure for MS or a way to prevent Alzheimer's.
The research program has run for more than 30 years
The AAN Research Program has funded brain research for more than 30 years. It is administered through the American Academy of Neurology Institute, the Academy's 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
Neurologists lead the AAN Board of Directors, Science Committee and Research Program Subcommittee. The AAN counts more than 44,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals among its members.
Brain research reaches beyond disease treatment
According to the AAN, brain research makes it possible to prevent, diagnose, treat and eventually even cure conditions of the brain and nervous system. It also advances understanding of memory, learning, sleep, mental health and healthy aging.
Individuals and organizations can both give
Individuals can make a tax-deductible gift through the "Donate to Research" page on the AAN's free public BrainHealth resource. Organizations interested in supporting the AAN Research Program can contact the AAN's donations team by email.
