L'Oréal India Turns 30: 26 Brands, Clean Energy, and a Widening National Footprint

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 14, 2026 – L'Oréal India, the wholly-owned Indian subsidiary of cosmetics group L'Oréal S.A., is marking 30 years of operations after first establishing itself in the country in 1994. Today the company is present across every major distribution channel — from mass-market supermarkets to pharmacies and high-end selective retail — carrying 26 brands and employing more than 1,800 people. With 90% of its products manufactured locally and facilities spread across Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, its footprint looks nothing like the single-brand import operation it once was. Recent milestones in renewable energy, new leadership appointments, and an education partnership signal a company actively reconfiguring itself for the next phase of India's rapidly growing beauty market.

A National Operation Built Over Three Decades

L'Oréal India runs two manufacturing plants — one in Chakan, Maharashtra, and one in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh — alongside its Mumbai headquarters, four regional offices, and research and innovation centers in both Mumbai and Bengaluru. Its 26-brand portfolio spans the full price spectrum. Mass-market shoppers can find L'Oréal Paris, Garnier, Maybelline New York, and NYX Professional Makeup in mainstream retail. Salon professionals work with Kérastase, Redken, Matrix, and L'Oréal Professionnel. At the premium end, Lancôme, Yves Saint Laurent, and Kiehl's are sold through selective distribution, while CeraVe is available in pharmacies. Fragrances from Ralph Lauren, Armani, Prada, Valentino, and Maison Margiela are handled through L'Oréal International Distribution.

Renewable Energy and a Decades-Long No-Testing Stance

L'Oréal India confirmed it has reached 100% renewable energy use across its India operations — a milestone highlighted in recent company updates. On product safety, L'Oréal globally stopped testing cosmetics on animals in 1989, more than 14 years before European Union regulations required it. For over 40 years, the group has also been developing human reconstructed skin models as an alternative testing method, allowing cosmetic ingredients to be evaluated without the use of live animals. The company describes this commitment under its "beauty with no animal testing" policy, which remains a core part of its global standards.

Why It Matters

India is one of the fastest-growing beauty markets globally, and L'Oréal India's scale gives it a direct line into millions of households across income levels. With 90% local production, the company supports domestic manufacturing employment while keeping supply chains shorter and more efficient. Its move to 100% renewables in India — ahead of many local competitors — sets a practical benchmark for the broader consumer goods sector in the country. For everyday shoppers, the breadth of the portfolio means L'Oréal-owned products are accessible whether someone is buying a basic shampoo at a neighbourhood store or a premium fragrance at a mall. The three-decades-long cruelty-free stance also carries real weight for the expanding segment of Indian consumers making animal-welfare-conscious purchasing choices.

New Leadership, New Divisions, and Community Work

Aseem Kaushik has led L'Oréal India as Managing Director since 2023, overseeing the launch of both the L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty and L'Oréal Luxury divisions — extending the company's presence in skincare and premium beauty. Raagjeet Garg was recently appointed Director of the Consumer Products Division. On the community front, L'Oréal India partnered with the Pratham Education Foundation to launch Project Udaan, an education-access initiative. The company has also issued a public warning about fraudulent job offers falsely claiming to represent L'Oréal India, urging job-seekers to report suspicious contact to local cybercrime authorities or the company's official consumer care team.

Thirty years in, L'Oréal India's combination of local production, a wide brand range across price points, and concrete steps on sustainability places it among the more strategically active consumer goods operators in the country.
