Amsterdam – September 12, 2026 -- The AION UT electric hatchback sedan has received a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP under its revised 2026 testing protocol, with the score published on September 2 applying to both left-hand and right-hand drive versions of the car.
Euro NCAP now tests four separate safety stages
The 2026 protocol breaks vehicle safety into four categories: safe driving, crash avoidance, crash protection, and post-crash safety. Each stage evaluates a different phase, from how a car assists a driver before a collision to how it protects occupants during impact and supports rescue operations afterward.
The AION UT scored 66% for safe driving, 74% for crash avoidance, 91% for crash protection, and 88% for post-crash safety, with the overall five-star rating reflecting combined performance across all four areas.
Child dummies scored maximum points in rear-seat crash tests
In frontal offset crash testing, all occupants received "good" or "adequate" protection ratings. Two child dummies seated in the rear achieved maximum points for protection. The full-width frontal crash test showed good or satisfactory protection across most body zones.
Side-impact pole tests produced top marks, including in far-side occupant evaluations. A center-mounted airbag reduces contact between front-seat occupants during side collisions.
Standard safety tech includes cyclist door-opening alerts
Crash avoidance testing covered autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance across scenarios involving vehicles, motorcycles, pedestrians, and cyclists. Euro NCAP noted the autonomous braking system performed well across numerous complex test scenarios.
The AION UT comes standard with emergency lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, reverse autonomous emergency braking, and a system designed to help prevent cyclist collisions when doors open.
Side windows stayed operational for over two minutes after water immersion
Post-crash testing examined rescue information availability, eCall system readiness, and vehicle function after water immersion. Euro NCAP found the side windows remained electrically operable for more than two minutes following submersion.
