BMW Celebrates 50 Years in the U.S. with Grand Opening of New Headquarters in Woodcliff Lake

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 8, 2025 - A legacy of performance, innovation, and community deepens as BMW of North America marks its 50th anniversary with the unveiling of a bold new headquarters.

A Milestone Moment for BMW in the United States

BMW of North America is celebrating a landmark achievement—50 years since launching operations in the United States. From humble beginnings in 1975, when the company took over U.S. import operations from the Hoffman Motor Corporation, BMW has grown into a dynamic, multi-brand enterprise with deep roots across the nation.

We’ve said it for many years, and yet it cannot be overstated – the U.S. is our second home,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “Our operations here are a vital hub where American ingenuity and expertise directly influence the products and innovations we deliver globally.

A New Era Begins at 200 BMW Drive

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Mackensen and attended by local leaders including New Jersey State Senator Holly Schepisi, Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo, and German Consul General Till Knorn, BMW of North America inaugurated its new U.S. headquarters. This state-of-the-art campus is now officially located at 200 BMW Drive, previously known as 200 Chestnut Ridge Road.

BMW has been an integral part of the American automotive landscape for 50 years, bringing innovation, performance, and luxury to drivers across the nation,” said Mayor Rendo. “May the next 50 years continue to build upon this legacy of success and progress!

Blending Design, Collaboration, and Sustainability

The reimagined headquarters in Woodcliff Lake spans 63.8 acres and includes three interconnected buildings. At the heart of the campus lies the central building, designed to foster connection through a dramatic two-story glazed entry pavilion and a communal green space.

Inside, modern workspaces are structured around ‘Main Street’—a centralized pathway encouraging interaction and collaboration. With flexible layouts, abundant natural light, and energy-efficient features, the headquarters represents BMW’s commitment to an innovative and people-first work environment.

With the new BMW North America headquarters, we foster cohesion, innovation power, and ultimately growth and success,” noted Ilka Horstmeier, BMW AG Member of the Board of Management, People & Places. “It's about adopting more agile ways of working, using digital tools and methods, and thereby driving our performance.

Art and Architecture Converge

Adding artistic flair, the building showcases more than 25 significant works of art rediscovered during renovations. Notable pieces include works by Alfred Jensen—renowned for his vibrant geometric compositions—and Alex Katz, a celebrated figure in American figurative art. These artistic touches contribute to a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere throughout the space.

A Heritage of Growth and Innovation

BMW’s journey in the U.S. began with 19,419 vehicle sales in 1975, including the iconic 2002 and 3.0 CSi coupe. That same year, BMW Motorsport made history by winning the 12 Hours of Sebring with the legendary 3.0 CSL, solidifying its performance credentials.

Over the decades, BMW has expanded its portfolio to include MINI, BMW Motorrad, and Rolls-Royce, launched BMW Financial Services, and opened the company’s largest production facility in the world in South Carolina. Today, BMW Group’s U.S. operations span nearly 30 locations in 12 states and contribute over $43.3 billion annually to the U.S. economy, supporting more than 120,000 jobs.

The BMW Group feels truly at home in the United States,” said Jochen Goller, BMW AG, Member of the Board of Management. “Our commitment is providing jobs, fostering investments, and driving technological advancements. We look forward to continuing our success story for another 50 years.

A Brand That Redefined Driving

BMW’s iconic slogan—“The Ultimate Driving Machine®”—also turns 50 this year. Originally coined by ad agency Amirati and Puris, the tagline encapsulates the spirit of BMW and its lasting connection with American drivers.

From performance vehicles to sustainable innovation, BMW remains committed to shaping the future of mobility while honoring its rich history in the U.S.
