SHERIDAN, WYOMING – November 02, 2024 – Renault has once again delved into its rich heritage to create a stunning restomod show car, this time in collaboration with renowned French designer Ora Ito. Based on the iconic Renault 17 sports coupé, the R17 electric restomod x Ora Ito is a unique and modern reinterpretation of the classic model launched in 1971.
This project is the latest in a series of collaborations between Renault and contemporary designers, each offering a fresh perspective on the brand's legendary vehicles. Previous collaborations include the SUITE N°4 concept by Mathieu Lehanneur, a reimagining of the Renault 4; the 5 Diamant prototype by Pierre Gonalons, an electric reinterpretation of the R5; and the Twingo electric show car designed by Sabine Marcelis.
R17 Electric Restomod x Ora Ito: A Fusion of Heritage and Innovation
The R17 electric restomod x Ora Ito is a testament to Renault's ability to blend its heritage with cutting-edge design and technology. Ora Ito, known for his avant-garde approach and "simplexity" philosophy, has infused the classic R17 with a bold and contemporary aesthetic.
"Revisiting an iconic vehicle like Renault 17 was a particularly exciting challenge," says Ora Ito. "Working alongside Renault, I was able to articulate my artistic vision to create a sculpture in my own image."
The restomod retains the original R17's cabin, doors, windows, and underbody, but with a wider body for enhanced roadholding. The exterior design is both spectacular and elegant, featuring four rectangular headlamps with rounded corners, a single strip of rear lights, and a Galactic Brown body color specially developed for the show car.
Under the hood, the R17 electric restomod x Ora Ito boasts a powerful all-electric 270 hp powertrain and a lightweight carbon fiber chassis. The interior maintains the comfort of the original while incorporating modern updates to the dashboard and center console. Redesigned seats with new upholstery and a central screen with Renault's current graphic environment add a contemporary touch.
"We kept the most distinctive design features of Renault 17, starting with the front end," explains Ora Ito. "My aim was to add style and flow, but without altering the character of R17. You can still see the original Renault 17 and its sports coupé looks."
A Celebration of Design and Collaboration
The R17 electric restomod x Ora Ito is not just a car; it's a symbol of Renault's commitment to innovation and its appreciation for its heritage. The project highlights the brand's ability to collaborate with leading designers to create unique and exciting vehicles that capture the spirit of the past while embracing the future.
"R17 restomod, reinterpreted by Ora Ito, aligns perfectly with our approach to uniting heritage and innovation," says Arnaud Belloni, Chief Branding Officer & VP of the Renault Brand. "R17 was part of pop culture, an icon of the 1970s with its avant-garde design and bold personality. This project celebrates Renault's original iconic design while giving it a contemporary twist with new features to create an experience that transcends the generations."
The R17 electric restomod x Ora Ito is a testament to the enduring appeal of classic car design and the power of collaboration to create something truly special. It's a car that will appeal to both those who remember the original R17 and a new generation of car enthusiasts.
