SHERIDAN, WYOMING – October 31, 2024 – Toyota is making waves at the 2024 SEMA Show with the unveiling of the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept, a custom creation that blends the rugged spirit of the first-generation 4Runner with the modern design and technology of the all-new 2025 model.

Inspired by Southern California's iconic surf culture of the 1980s, this concept vehicle is a tribute to the adventurous lifestyle that defined a generation.

"The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4cyl engine. I knew it had the potential to be the ultimate beach cruiser," said Marty Schwerter, lead builder and Director of Operations at Toyota's Motorsports Technical Center.

A Modern Take on a Classic

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept started life as a 2025 4Runner TRD Limited, equipped with a 2.4L turbocharged engine delivering 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft of torque.

But Schwerter and his team at the Toyota Motorsports Garage envisioned something more – a vehicle that captured the essence of those carefree days cruising the Pacific Coast Highway in a classic Toyota mini pickup.

Removable Top and Open-Air Freedom

One of the most striking features of the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is its removable top, a nod to the first-generation 4Runner and a symbol of open-air freedom.

"Engineering a legitimate, removable top; going from a 4-door to a 2-door while maintaining functional windows; flipping the front passenger seat for improved rear seat access; and adding 2-inches of width to both sides were all just tip of the iceberg issues," Schwerter explained. "What makes this build so stellar has less to do with the changes themselves and more to do with the amazing way that they all work together – the result is truly greater than the sum of the parts."

Rugged and Ready for Adventure

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is not just about looks; it's built for adventure. The long-travel suspension system, featuring billet aluminum front upper and lower A-arms, is designed to handle any terrain.

37-inch tires mounted on 17x8.5-inch custom wheels complete the concept's rugged appearance, while the weatherproofed interior with soft, waterproof flooring ensures comfort and practicality.

A Collaborative Effort

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is a testament to the collaborative spirit within Toyota, bringing together various departments to create a truly unique vehicle.

"This vehicle not only showcases Toyota's engineering prowess; it also reflects the passion and creativity of our team members who are dedicated to pushing the boundaries. And besides, who doesn't love a concept dedicated to surfing!?" said Mike Tripp, group vice president, Toyota Marketing.
