Chicago Auto Show's Test Drive Event Returns With New Name, More Vehicles

OAKBROOK TERRACE – September 04, 2026 -- The Chicago Automobile Trade Association is relaunching its fall test drive event under a new name, Chicago Auto Show: Behind the Wheel, running Oct. 1-4, 2026, at the ComEd Building in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.

Previously called Chicago Drives Electric, the rebranded event now includes gas-powered, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles alongside EVs, letting shoppers compare powertrains side by side. Participating brands include BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Tesla, Toyota and VinFast, with a full vehicle list to be announced closer to the event.

Driving sessions cost $10 and require a valid license

Test drives are available on a first-come, first-served basis for attendees 18 and older with a valid driver's license. Tickets are $10 per driving participant, while non-driving guests can register for free. Sessions run Thursday, Oct. 1 (1-6 p.m.); Friday, Oct. 2 (8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1-6 p.m.); Saturday, Oct. 3 (8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1-6 p.m.); and Sunday, Oct. 4 (9 a.m.-1 p.m.). Registration is open at ChicagoAutoShow.com/BehindTheWheel.

CATA President Jennifer Morand said the event reflects how consumer needs have shifted, giving shoppers a chance to test EVs, hybrids and traditional gas vehicles in one location to make informed decisions. Product specialists will be on-site to explain vehicle technologies and help attendees match models to their driving needs.

The 2027 Chicago Auto Show follows in February

The next full Chicago Auto Show public event is scheduled for Feb. 13-21, 2027, at McCormick Place, with a Media Preview on Feb. 11-12 and the First Look for Charity gala on the evening of Feb. 12. Tickets for both the 2027 show and the gala go on sale this fall at ChicagoAutoShow.com.
