Garmin Debuts SmartDrive, First Brushless Autopilot for Sailboats

Olathe – September 04, 2026 -- Garmin has launched SmartDrive, an autopilot system for sailboats and catamarans up to 45 feet and 33,000 pounds of maximum displacement, priced at $3,499.99 as a standalone actuator.

SmartDrive uses a brushless linear actuator with a built-in ECU

The system is the first sailboat autopilot to pair a brushless linear actuator with an integrated ECU and rudder feedback sensor, according to Garmin. As part of the Reactor 40 Corepack, it delivers up to 1,050 pounds of maximum thrust to help maintain steady rudder control.

Fewer cables mean simpler installation

SmartDrive operates with fewer cables and external components than typical setups, and its form factor matches other linear actuators on the market. Garmin designed it to serve as a direct replacement for retrofit installations, and it connects to compatible Garmin multifunction displays via the NMEA 2000 network.

A bundled Corepack adds a touchscreen display and improved sailing tools

Buyers can also purchase the Reactor 40 Sail Corepack with SmartDrive, starting at $4,499.99. The bundle includes a CCU with a built-in solid-state 9-axis AHRS and a GHC 50 autopilot display featuring a 5-inch touchscreen that can be operated from multiple locations on a boat. Garmin says the Corepack improves wind hold performance and offers more accurate tack and gybe maneuvers with adjustable speeds, auto response, and a dockside calibration wizard.

The system works with existing Garmin controllers

The Reactor 40 Corepack with SmartDrive is compatible with the Reactor 40 autopilot wireless remote, the APK 10 autopilot keypad, and select Garmin quatix marine smartwatches, provided users have a compatible Garmin chartplotter or GHC 50 instrument.

Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales & Marketing Susan Lyman said SmartDrive was built to deliver precise steering and reliable performance in demanding offshore conditions.
