MILWAUKEE – October 28, 2026 -- Northwestern Mutual policyowners are in line for a record $10.4 billion dividend payout in 2027, the largest in the company's history and more than $1 billion above 2026.
It will be the 156th consecutive year the insurer returns value to its policyowners. Over the past four years, the annual payout is estimated to have grown by more than 50%, or about $3.5 billion.
Dividends can cover premiums, provide cash or boost policy values
Policyowners can use their dividends to help cover premiums, access cash, or increase policy values and benefits. About $8.9 billion of the 2027 payout, roughly 85%, goes to Whole Life Insurance policyowners. Most of them use it to buy paid-up additional insurance, which grows both the accumulated value and the death benefit of the policy.
Roughly $1.2 billion is expected to go to non-life products. Eligible disability income, long-term care insurance and annuity policyowners also receive dividends.
A mutual structure returns roughly 90% of operating gains to policyowners
Northwestern Mutual is a mutual company, so it operates for its policyowners rather than outside shareholders. The company says it returns roughly 90% of its operating gains through dividends and that the 2027 payout is the largest in the industry.
Nearly 97% of policyowners keep their policies year after year, based on company client data as of December 31, 2025. By Northwestern Mutual's own calculation, that is the highest persistency rate among the four major mutual companies: Northwestern Mutual, Guardian Life, MassMutual and New York Life. The calculation uses a 10-year average lapse ratio for 2016-2025.
CEO Tim Gerend said "financial anxiety is at near-record highs." The company ties the payout to a period in which housing costs push homeownership further out of reach for many Americans.
The company has paid a dividend every year since 1872
Those payments total approximately $180 billion. They continued through the Great Depression, two world wars and the 2008 financial crisis.
All four major rating agencies have given top marks for 34 straight years
Northwestern Mutual's General Account investment portfolio totals more than $380 billion as of mid-2026. For 34 consecutive years, all four major ratings agencies have affirmed its financial strength ratings as the highest available to any U.S. life insurance company.
Whole Life Insurance provides a death benefit plus guaranteed growth, as long as premiums are paid. Dividends themselves are not guaranteed: the dividend scale is reviewed annually, and the company's Board of Trustees decides on the determination and allocation of divisible surplus.
