NYC and Long Island Winter Gas Bills: What National Grid Forecasts

New York – October 14, 2026 -- A typical New York City household using 720 therms of natural gas this winter is forecast to pay about $1,765, or $87 more than last year, according to National Grid. On Long Island and in the Rockaways, the same usage is projected to cost about $1,461, just $5 more.

Cheaper gas supply, pricier delivery

The forecasts cover the November-to-March heating season and assume normal winter weather. In New York City, the period runs from Nov. 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027.

On Long Island, supply costs are projected to fall by about $120 compared with last winter. Delivery charges rise by $125 under a rate proposal the Public Service Commission approved in 2024.

In New York City, supply is projected to drop by about $124, while delivery climbs by $211 under the same 2024 approval.

National Grid says supply charges are exactly what it pays, with no markup. Delivery charges cover network maintenance and operation, including a 24/7 workforce, repairs, storm response and system upgrades. The forecasts rely on market information available at the end of September, so actual bills will vary with temperatures, household use and market changes.

More than $290 million in discounts is available

National Grid's current Downstate New York rate plan makes more than $290 million in bill discounts available to income-eligible and vulnerable customers. In 2025, more than 3,100 customers received $1.4 million through the Care & Share and Hope & Warmth programs.

Interim New York President Matt Barnett said customers who need help should contact the company to find a workable solution.

Five assistance programs for income-eligible customers
  • HEAP: Opens in November and provides grants that do not need to be repaid. Customers apply through their local department of social services.
  • Enhanced Energy Affordability Program: Gives a monthly bill credit to customers who do not qualify for HEAP and have household income at or below the state median.
  • Energy Affordability Program: Offers monthly gas and electric bill credits, including to many HEAP-eligible customers.
  • EmPower+ New York: NYSERDA's program offers free home energy assessments and upgrades such as insulation, efficient lighting and appliance upgrades.
  • Care & Share Energy Fund: Opens in February 2027 with heating grants for customers who meet HEAP income guidelines.

All residential customers can enroll in the Budget Plan, which spreads payments more evenly across the year. A virtual NYSERDA Home Energy Assessment comes with a free Home Energy Plan. Customers can call National Grid at 1-800-642-4272.

Thermostat and draft tips can trim the bill

National Grid says each degree a thermostat is set back may save 1% to 3% on annual heating costs. A properly used smart thermostat can save 10% on heating and cooling costs annually, and reducing drafts may save 15%.

The company also advises unplugging idle electronics, which can save up to 10% per year, and removing window air conditioners in cold months. Choosing an energy-efficient appliance can cut energy costs by 10% to 50%.
