Rancho Cordova, Calif. – September 19, 2026 -- New survey data from the Retirement Coaches Association shows 96% of professional retirement coaches believe poor vision can significantly threaten clients' independence and quality of life, with 61% saying they've directly seen clients scale back social activities or daily routines because of vision concerns.
The research, conducted in partnership with VSP Individual Vision Plans, surveyed 115 retirement coaches in May 2026 to gauge how sensory health affects retirement outcomes.
Original Medicare typically excludes routine eye exams and eyewear costs
Coverage through Medicare Advantage and other plans varies widely, leaving many retirees responsible for expenses they didn't anticipate. A routine eye exam costs approximately $214 out of pocket on average in the U.S. for those without vision insurance, according to VSP data.
Robert Laura, founder of the Retirement Coaches Association, said vision affects a retiree's ability to stay connected to the people, routines and activities that give retirement meaning. He argued routine vision care deserves a place alongside financial planning and health care costs in retirement-readiness conversations.
Medicare Open Enrollment creates a window to review vision coverage gaps
The timing coincides with Medicare Open Enrollment, when retirees can reassess whether current benefits address routine vision needs. Separate research cited by Optometry Times found many U.S. patients delay eye care despite experiencing poor eyesight, citing cost and competing priorities as barriers.
Without adequate coverage, retirees face a choice: pay out of pocket for exams and eyewear, or postpone care and continue experiencing vision problems that can affect daily independence.
VSP Individual Vision Plans offer same-day coverage for exams and eyewear
John Keys, vice president and general manager of Direct to Consumer at VSP Vision Care, said retirees need flexible options to make vision care more affordable and easier to plan for. VSP Individual Vision Plans provide same-day coverage for eye exams and eyewear, access to a network of eye care professionals, and both monthly and annual payment options. The plans are available for enrollment year-round and do not coordinate benefits with Medicare.
