Silver Bars, Mining Stocks or ETFs? How Each Route Differs

Canada – October 31, 2026 -- Investors can own silver as physical bullion, as mining-company shares or through exchange-traded products, and each route carries different costs, risks and levels of control.

Bullion is the metal itself. Mining shares are part ownership of a business. Exchange-traded products can track either the silver price or a basket of miners. The right choice depends on what you want silver to do in your portfolio: direct ownership, silver-price exposure or exposure to mining-company growth.

Physical silver adds premiums and storage costs

Retail buyers rarely pay the quoted spot price for coins or small bars. Dealers add a premium that reflects manufacturing, distribution, product size, supply conditions and their own margins. A dealer buying back from an investor may offer less than the retail selling price, so silver may need to rise before the original costs are recovered.
