Speyer – October 27, 2026 -- Comparing moving quotes by price alone can hide how a company will actually treat your furniture, say the founders of Speyer-based John & Martin Umzüge. Leon Martin and Daniel John point to several things customers can check before they book, and to a care-insurance grant of up to €4,180 for eligible movers.
A site visit of 30 to 40 minutes comes before the quote
According to the company, an in-person inspection takes place in 95 percent of cases. A moving adviser, or one of the two founders, goes through the household goods with the customer and clarifies which furniture is going and which extras are needed, such as furniture assembly or packing. The company usually sends an individual quote within 24 hours.
The founders advise customers to check what the quote actually lists, not just the bottom line. With unusually cheap offers, it is worth asking whether packing material, assembly work and other extras are really included. The company recommends four to five weeks of lead time, though it also reviews shorter-notice requests. It says about 80 percent of its moves are finished within six to nine hours, while larger households or longer distances can take two to three days or more.
Door guards, floor fleece and 200 meters of bubble wrap protect the furniture
John & Martin says it always uses special door protectors and, depending on the job, lays fleece on floors. Furniture is packed to suit its condition. Delicate pieces get bubble wrap on surfaces, edges and legs, plus moving blankets. The company says many competitors use only moving blankets, some of them very thin.
For one job with numerous old, fragile pieces, the team used roughly 200 meters of bubble wrap to protect wood surfaces and feet. The company says its wrap has three layers and is considerably thicker than standard film.
A color and priority system helps you find essentials fast
Customers can label furniture and boxes by destination room and mark each box as low, medium or high priority. Important items are then placed so they do not end up buried under other boxes after the move.
Seniors can have boxes packed and unpacked, and the care fund may contribute
Martin says the team sometimes packs boxes for seniors and later unpacks them. On request, it packs cupboard contents and personal belongings.
If a move takes a person in need of care into a demonstrably more barrier-free home, the care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) can support it as a home-environment improvement measure. From care level 2, a grant of up to €4,180 is possible if the requirements are met. The application must be filed before the move. Martin and John say they help with applications and questions about cost coverage.
The company serves private customers around Speyer, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Neustadt and Worms, and also moves businesses, medical practices and law firms.
