Bonn – September 12, 2026 -- A precast concrete garage can shield cars, e-bikes and tools from break-ins, storm damage and summer heat, according to the Fachvereinigung Betonfertiggaragen e.V. (Association for Precast Concrete Garages). The group notes that nearly half of all burglary attempts fail, and that resistance time is the key factor deterring intruders.
Doors and gates should meet resistance class RC 2
Police recommend doors and windows meet at least resistance class RC 2 under DIN EN 1627, while garage doors should be tested and classified under DIN/TS 18194. "RC-2 elements are tested with simple tools in a standardized procedure and must withstand at least three minutes of resistance. It is important that the entire element is installed correctly," says Matthäus Moser of the association.
Concrete walls hold the frame that makes security hardware work
A precast concrete garage is built from factory-made reinforced concrete, often cast seamlessly in one piece. The material is solid and pressure-resistant, leaving no hollow spaces where a lever tool could gain purchase. Moser stresses that certified security elements require a correspondingly tested, massive wall structure -- ordinary wood-frame walls, steel garages or drywall construction typically do not meet this requirement. Owners of existing precast concrete garages can retrofit secure doors, gates and windows.
Sensors and light barriers add smart monitoring
Motion or vibration sensors can alert owners via smartphone and trigger outdoor lighting. Motorized doors can show status in an app, with remote locking available depending on the setup. "Additional security comes from a light barrier integrated into the door," Moser explains. "A correctly installed light barrier can interrupt the closing process if a person or object is in its detection range."
Massive walls resist storms and hail better than lightweight structures
Carports and lightweight garages can reach their limits in strong gusts, but a properly planned and anchored reinforced concrete structure withstands wind and hail, with its own weight helping keep it in place. Moser notes that flying branches, roof tiles and large hailstones cannot damage the massive outer walls. Partial comprehensive car insurance in Germany typically only covers storm damage from wind force 8 and above -- damage that a concrete garage largely prevents. Many insurers reward this with a garage discount.
Thermal mass keeps interior temperatures lower during heat waves
At temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius and above, concrete's high mass and thermal inertia absorb outside heat and release it gradually, keeping interior air from heating up as sharply. This protects heat-sensitive vehicle components and benefits drivers directly: starting a trip from a cooler garage means a noticeably lower cabin temperature at departure.
