Protect Your Water Heater Before the First Freeze Hits

Detroit – October 16, 2026 -- Detroit-area homeowners can avoid costly water heater repairs and lost hot water by preparing before the first fall freeze, according to heating and cooling company C & C Heating & Air Conditioning.

Water heaters run year-round, but colder weather adds risk. Units and connecting pipes in garages, basements or other unheated spaces are most exposed. During prolonged cold spells, exposed plumbing can freeze, which may damage pipes and interrupt hot water service.

A professional tune-up can catch problems early

C & C General Manager Dayna Hottle recommends an annual professional inspection and tune-up. In her view, it helps identify problems early and extends the lifespan of a water heater.

Three steps homeowners can take themselves
  • Insulate exposed pipes. Use foam insulation on all pipes attached to the water heater.
  • Check the thermostat. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, since temperatures set too low can encourage ice formation.
  • Reduce drafty spaces. Keeping out cold air helps prevent freezing, especially in garages or basements that are not heated like the rest of the home.
Treat it like your furnace

Hottle notes that homeowners tend to take water heaters for granted because they work behind the scenes every day. She says they deserve the same attention as a furnace or other major home systems, particularly heading into a Michigan winter, when losing hot water is especially troublesome.

Homeowners can schedule water heater maintenance with C & C by phone at (586) 439-3319.
