Berlin – October 28, 2026 -- Travelers from Germany heading abroad over the holidays can find noticeably cheaper flights to several destinations, with tickets to Lima averaging 29 percent less than a year ago. That is the finding of the new KAYAK Travel Check-in for winter 2026.
Long-haul fares to Lima, Cairo and Mauritius have dropped
Flights to Cairo cost 18 percent less on average than last year. Flights to Port Louis on Mauritius are 14 percent cheaper. For travelers who would rather spend Christmas in summer temperatures than at a Christmas market, those are the biggest drops in KAYAK's data.
Milan, Rome and Vienna fares are down 6 to 7 percent
Short-haul trips have also gotten cheaper. A round-trip flight to Milan averages 116 euros, 7 percent below last year. Rome costs 169 euros on average, also 7 percent less. Vienna averages 170 euros, 6 percent cheaper than in 2025.
The drops are larger for two further European destinations. Round trips to Catania in Sicily average 240 euros, 14 percent less than last year. Madeira costs 510 euros on average, 12 percent less.
Flying on December 21 costs 22 percent less than December 19
The departure date matters as much as the destination. International round trips leaving on December 21 cost 22 percent less on average than those leaving on December 19, currently the most expensive departure day in the period KAYAK analyzed. Leaving on Christmas Eve can also pay off.
December 23 is the busiest day. It has the most flight searches for international departures, so travelers should expect crowds.
How KAYAK gathered the numbers
The data comes from flight and hotel searches on KAYAK.de and its affiliated brands between April 1 and September 1, 2026, for trips from December 19, 2026, to January 9, 2027. KAYAK compared them with searches from the same months in 2025 for travel between December 20, 2025, and January 10, 2026. All flight prices are average economy-class round-trip fares. KAYAK notes that prices can fluctuate, savings are not guaranteed and the percentages are approximate.
