oneworld Launches One-Step Digital Check-in Across Airlines

Lisbon – October 12, 2026 -- Travellers on multi-carrier trips across the oneworld alliance can now check in once, scan their passport and save boarding passes to their digital wallet. The feature is live on all alliance carriers and covers every oneworld-operated flight in an itinerary, regardless of which airline operates the first leg.

The feature runs on oneworld's proprietary technology, which lets different member airlines' systems communicate through a shared digital platform.

One app handles every leg of the journey

The alliance gives an example of an American Airlines customer flying from Kuala Lumpur to Dallas-Fort Worth via Tokyo. The first flight is on Malaysia Airlines, with a connection to American Airlines. The process works like this:

  • The customer completes a single check-in in the American Airlines app, including the passport scan.
  • Each flight gets a boarding pass branded for its operating airline, here Malaysia Airlines and American Airlines. Both can be saved to a digital wallet.
  • The customer can go straight to bag drop or security without seeing a check-in agent.
Malaysia Airlines is the first to adopt it

Bryan Foong, chief executive officer of Airline Business at Malaysia Aviation Group, said Malaysia Airlines is the first airline to adopt the technology. He said it adds convenience and continuity when connecting with oneworld partners, and lets customers manage more of their journey through their preferred digital channel.

American Airlines, a founding member of oneworld, is also involved. Anmol Bhargava, its senior vice president of Global Alliances, said the airline will keep working with partners on solutions that remove friction from travel.

oneworld says it is the first alliance to cover all member pairings

Guido van Til spoke at the second oneworld Innovation Summit in Lisbon. He described oneworld as the first alliance to offer digital check-in across all member airline pairings. Customers can use their favourite airline app and arrive at the airport ready to fly, he said.

oneworld CEO Ole Orver said the alliance is prioritising this layered technology across every member airline.

Codeshare check-in and live boarding passes come next

Future phases will add check-in on codeshare itineraries. They will also bring dynamic, up-to-the-minute boarding passes.
