Golden Scoop Trades Storefront for Food Truck, Expands Jobs for Scoopers

Overland Park, Kan. – October 05, 2026 -- The Golden Scoop, a nonprofit ice cream and coffee shop staffed by adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will close its original storefront at 9540 Nall Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 31, and replace it with a mobile food truck available for bookings across the Kansas City metro.

The shop opened in April 2021 and quickly drew lines wrapping around its strip center, prompting a second, larger location with a drive-thru at 10460 W. 103rd St., less than three miles away. With two storefronts operating so close together, the organization decided to put its newest unit on wheels instead of opening a third fixed site.

Every current Super Scooper keeps their job

All team members currently working at 9540 Nall Ave. will continue with The Golden Scoop, moving to the 103rd Street shop or onto the new truck. CEO Amber Schreiber said the mission was never about four walls, and the truck lets the team show up at games, office parties and other events across the city, creating more shifts and training more people.

COO Allison Woodland said the product and people behind it are not changing -- same Super Scoopers, same ice cream -- but the truck lets them reach far more customers than a single storefront could.

The truck launched during National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The rollout coincides with National Disability Employment Awareness Month, observed every October. The organization opened the month on Oct. 1 with its Celebrity Scooper program, featuring Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson working behind the counter, and is closing the month by expanding its reach with the truck.

One last scoop before Halloween

Customers can visit 9540 Nall Ave. through Oct. 31 before the location shuts down. The 103rd Street shop remains open afterward, and the truck will be available for office events, schools, ballfields, festivals and private parties by booking.

The Golden Scoop's reach already extends beyond its shops through pints and cups sold at area grocery stores and its Golden Connection program, which places products in special education classrooms across the Blue Valley, Olathe and Shawnee Mission school districts. A public ribbon cutting for the truck is expected later this fall.
