How Pampers Tests Its Baby Wipes for Skin Safety

Schwalbach am Taunus – October 29, 2026 -- Pampers baby wipes are alcohol-free, and the Aqua Soft Touch, 99 % Water Wipes and Sensitive variants are also fragrance-free. The company says it checks ingredients, production and finished products for safety and skin compatibility, and adds checks by outside organizations.

Pampers says a pH buffer system helps restore skin after contact with urine and stool

The wipes are designed for newborns' sensitive skin and for daily use in the diaper area. Pampers says the buffer system helps restore the skin's naturally slightly acidic pH after contact with urine and stool, and that plain water and cotton often fall short. Gentle emulsifiers dissolve oily dirt that water alone cannot fully remove. Exact composition varies by product variant, and the water content depends on the product.

Two published studies come with clear limits

A 2021 study in Pediatric Dermatology, conducted by Pampers experts, examined a routine combining a diaper with protective balm and a pH-balancing wipe. Babies on that routine showed fewer severe cases of diaper rash. Pampers states that the result applies to the product combination and does not show an independent effect of the wipe.

A 2025 study in Global Pediatrics compared pH-buffering wipes with cotton washcloths and water. The wipes tested contributed to a lower skin pH and less visible redness. Pampers notes that this does not prove all wipes beat water, or that every Pampers variant performs the same way.

Three outside checks do three different jobs

Dermatest: The wipes are dermatologically tested by Dermatest®, an independent dermatological institute based in Germany. Such tests assess skin compatibility, and how meaningful a result is depends on what was tested and under which conditions.

Skin Health Alliance: The wipes are accredited by this independent non-profit organization. Dermatologists scientifically evaluate a product's ingredients and dermatological test data for accreditation, which is distinct from a single dermatological test.

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: The fragrance-free wipes are certified under this international textile label and tested for more than 1,000 substances of concern. Some requirements go beyond legal rules, the standard is updated annually, and certificates are renewed regularly. Pampers stresses that this is not a dermatological skin compatibility test.

What parents can look for on the pack

Pampers advises choosing a gentle, pH-balancing formulation with carefully selected ingredients. It also recommends looking for independent testing and accreditations, such as Dermatest or the Skin Health Alliance.
