Seattle – October 06, 2026 -- REI Co-op and Japanese retailer BEAMS today launched the BEAMS x REI Co-op Expedition Parka, a limited-edition jacket based on an original 1986 design found in REI's archive. Only 500 units were made, and the parka goes on sale October 6 for $599 online and at select stores.
The jacket pairs 1986 styling with 2026 materials
The parka uses WINDSTOPPER by GORE-TEX LABS fabric, 650-fill-power down insulation and recycled materials. Its durable water repellent coating is made without PFAS, and the jacket is produced in a Fair Trade Certified factory. A coordinating stuff sack and co-branded details are included.
REI's creative director says the archive piece still holds up
Scott Mosher, creative director of Brand at REI Co-op, said the original Expedition Parka's purposeful design and durability remain relevant nearly 40 years later. He said the BEAMS partnership let the co-op revisit that heritage through a new design perspective.
Keita Kobayashi, BEAMS Men's Casual Buyer, said the team studied the archive parka's original details to preserve what made it distinctly REI while adapting it for how people dress today.
This is the second REI-BEAMS collaboration in two years
The release follows a 2025 three-way collaboration between REI, BEAMS and Swiss brand On, which also drew on REI's archive for colorways. REI, headquartered near Seattle, counts 26 million co-op members. BEAMS, founded in Tokyo's Harajuku district in 1976, operates roughly 165 stores across Japan and Asia.
