Bryn Mawr -- As the world marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Harcum College is spotlighting how it has kept the memory of one victim, Kevin D. Marlo, alive through a campus theatre and a scholarship fund that has raised more than $1.5 million.
Marlo, a passionate actor connected to the Harcum community, died in the September 11 attacks. In the years after his death, his family worked with the college to restore and rename its Little Theatre in his honor, creating the Kevin D. Marlo Theatre on Harcum's Bryn Mawr campus near Philadelphia.
The scholarship has supported more than 100 students since it began.
The Marlo family also helped establish the Kevin D. Marlo Scholarship, which provides partial tuition support to Harcum students who show academic merit and financial need. The scholarship's annual fundraiser, the Kevin D. Marlo Golf & Racquet Classic, has raised over $1.5 million and awarded funds to more than 100 students since its inception.
A current recipient says the scholarship eased financial pressure on his family.
James Mallon, an anticipated 2027 Physical Therapy Assistant graduate and scholarship recipient, said receiving the award allowed him to focus on his education without constant financial stress and gave his family relief from that burden.
The theatre keeps Marlo's name visible on campus, while the scholarship ties it to ongoing educational opportunity. Harcum frames both as tangible ways the college community continues to remember one of the thousands of individuals lost on September 11, connecting that day's history to the personal story of a student the college knew.
