Munich – September 08, 2026 -- The historical epic THE UPRISING - FOR FREEDOM had its German premiere at Munich's Arri Kino to a sold-out crowd, ahead of its nationwide theatrical release on September 10, 2026.
The cast brings a 14th-century rebellion to the screen
The film stars Andrew Garfield, Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis and Thomasin McKenzie, with Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass behind the camera and an original score by Oscar winner Volker Bertelmann. Jonny Lee Miller also appears in a supporting role.
The premiere was hosted by history influencer MissHistory, with LEONINE's Bernhard zu Castell and producers Philipp Kreuzer and Christoph Degenhart of Supernix presenting the film. Greengrass and Garfield sent video messages thanking attendees, which the audience received enthusiastically.
Shot entirely in Bavaria, from Nuremberg to Penzing Studios
Production took place across Bavaria, including Munich's Penzing Studios, Nuremberg's old town, the Bad Windsheim open-air museum and Lichtenau Fortress. The German-British-American co-production comes from Blumhouse Productions, Supernix and Thank You Pictures, with LEONINE Studios distributing in Germany and Austria and Focus Features handling the US release. Funding came from FFF Bayern, DFFF, FISAplus and Film in Austria.
The story follows England's 1381 Peasants' Revolt
Set in 14th-century England after a devastating plague, the film follows farmer Ploughman (Garfield), who joins a rebellion against the tyrannical rule of young King Richard II. Rebel leaders Wat Tyler (Jarvis) and preacher John Ball (Bell) rally the population against crushing taxes and social injustice. The uprising marches on London, where clashes with the corrupt establishment turn violent, forcing the king to consider negotiations.
