United States – October 14, 2026 -- Light truck and SUV drivers can now see which tires last longest: Treadwell, Discount Tire's tire recommendation tool, identified 10 models with a median lifespan above 70,000 miles in normal driving conditions. Every one of those tires that carries a limited treadwear warranty also beat its manufacturer warranty by more than 10,000 miles.
Millions of readings and independent tests back the ranking
The findings draw on millions of real-world tire mileage and tread depth readings, plus independent testing at Treadwell Research Park. Results use a median lifespan measured down to 2/32 inch of tread, generally treated as the minimum viable depth and a legal standard in some states.
The data covers drivers who maintain their tires properly, including regular rotations and wheel alignments. Individual results can differ based on location and habits, such as highway versus all-terrain driving.
Michelin leads highway driving at 104,851 miles
For highway drivers, the Michelin Defender LTX Platinum is the top performer, with a median lifespan of 104,851 miles. For all-terrain drivers, the Falken Wildpeak A/T4W leads at 84,850 miles.
U.S. drivers average 13,400 miles per year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. At that pace, long-lasting tires could mean an extra year or more before a tire change.
Discount Tire recommends replacement at 4/32 inch
Discount Tire advises replacing tires once tread wears below 4/32 inch, because stopping power and hydroplane resistance drop significantly below that level. To stretch tire life, it recommends regular rotations, wheel alignments and air pressure checks.
Dr. John Baldwin, chief product and technical strategist at Discount Tire, called Treadwell a source of "unbiased advice" for drivers who want more safe miles from their tires. More than 20 million people used the tool online and in stores in the last year. It gives personalized recommendations based on the vehicle, where the driver drives and how they prefer to drive.
