SHERIDAN, WYOMING – July 2, 2024 – Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany's national railway company, and the Rhine/Main Regional Transport Association (RMV) announced the official launch of KIRA, an innovative pilot program testing Level 4 autonomous vehicles for public transportation in the Rhine-Main region. This landmark initiative marks a significant step towards integrating self-driving technology into public transit networks, promising to revolutionize the future of mobility in Germany.

KIRA: Pioneering Autonomous Mobility Solutions

The KIRA project deploys autonomous shuttles, equipped with Level 4 automation capabilities, in Darmstadt and the Offenbach district. These vehicles are designed to navigate intricate traffic scenarios independently, a major leap forward in autonomous vehicle technology. While safety drivers remain onboard during the initial phase, the project represents a bold stride towards a future where public transport is seamlessly integrated with autonomous mobility.

Strategic Partnerships and Technological Innovation

KIRA is a testament to the power of collaboration, uniting industry leaders in a concerted effort to advance autonomous transportation. DB Regio Bus Mitte oversees the operation of the vehicles, while DB subsidiary ioki provides the software platform facilitating booking and route planning. Mobileye's cutting-edge self-driving system is also undergoing evaluation within the project framework. Notably, KIRA has garnered substantial financial support from both the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the state of Hesse, underscoring the project's national significance.

Rigorous Testing and Implementation Strategy

The pilot program is set to run until the end of 2024, with a potential extension under consideration. Over the course of the trial, six autonomous shuttles will be gradually introduced in Darmstadt and Offenbach, serving the HEAG mobilo and Kreisverkehrsgesellschaft Offenbach (kvgOF) networks.

While public access to the shuttles is not yet available, a select group of participants will soon be invited to experience the technology firsthand through a dedicated app. The valuable insights gathered during this phase will be instrumental in refining the system for broader deployment.

Transforming the Public Transport Landscape

KIRA embodies a visionary approach to public transportation, aiming to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability through the integration of autonomous vehicles. By offering a safer, more convenient, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional modes of transport, the project has the potential to redefine how people travel.

Deutsche Bahn and RMV's commitment to innovation is evident in this pioneering initiative. The KIRA project not only showcases the transformative power of autonomous technology but also positions Germany at the forefront of the global shift towards a more intelligent and sustainable transportation future.
