Honda Celebrates 25 Years of Hybrid Leadership in America

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Jan. 13, 2025 – Honda is marking a significant milestone: 25 years of hybrid-electric vehicle sales in the United States. This journey began with the introduction of the groundbreaking first-generation Honda Insight in 1999, a car that paved the way for the hybrid revolution. Today, hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) represent over 25% of Honda's total sales, showcasing the company's commitment to electrification and sustainable mobility.

A Legacy of Innovation: The First-Generation Insight

The original Honda Insight was a pioneer in the world of hybrid technology. As the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle available in the U.S., it set a new standard for fuel efficiency, achieving an impressive EPA highway mileage rating of 70 mpg – a record that remains unbroken for non-BEVs. This remarkable achievement was made possible by a combination of innovative technologies, including:

  • Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™) hybrid powertrain: This groundbreaking system seamlessly integrated a gasoline engine with an electric motor to optimize fuel consumption.
  • Lightweight aluminum body and structure: Drawing on its experience with the NSX supercar, Honda utilized aluminum extensively in the Insight's construction, reducing weight and increasing fuel efficiency.
  • Aerodynamic design: The Insight's sleek and aerodynamic shape minimized drag, further contributing to its exceptional fuel economy.

"Twenty-five years after making history with America's first hybrid-electric vehicle, hybrids now account for more than 25% of Honda auto sales," said Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Sales. "As we advance step-by-step toward our goal of carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities, our popular hybrid models are a critical part of our longer-term electrification strategy that supports our ultimate goal of zero environmental impact by 2050."

Honda's Hybrid Evolution: From Insight to Today's Lineup

Honda's commitment to hybrid technology extends far beyond the original Insight. Today, the company offers a diverse range of hybrid models, including the Civic, Accord, and CR-V. These vehicles feature Honda's award-winning two-motor hybrid system, delivering impressive fuel efficiency and performance.

Made in America: Hybrid Production and Electrification Strategy

Honda's hybrid vehicles are not only designed for the American market but also built in North America. The CR-V hybrid is produced at plants in Ohio, Indiana, and Canada, while the Accord hybrid is manufactured in Ohio. The Civic Hatchback hybrid is produced in Indiana, and the Civic Sedan hybrid is made in Canada.

These production efforts are part of Honda's broader electrification strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050. The company plans to transition to 100% electric vehicle sales by 2040, with hybrid-electric vehicles serving as a crucial bridge in this transition.

The Future of Honda Electrification: Prologue and Beyond

Honda is actively expanding its electric vehicle lineup. The Honda Prologue, the brand's first all-electric SUV, launched this year. In late 2025, Honda will begin production of EVs based on its new Honda-developed EV platform at the Honda EV Hub in Ohio. This facility will have the flexibility to produce gasoline, hybrid-electric, and battery-electric vehicles on the same assembly line.

Looking further ahead, Honda has ambitious plans for its new EV series, the Honda 0 Series. The first production model, a Saloon, is scheduled for release in fall 2026. This will be followed by a diverse range of Honda 0 Series models, with a total of seven planned for global introduction by 2030.

Honda's Continued Commitment to Sustainability

Honda's 25-year journey in hybrid technology demonstrates the company's dedication to innovation and sustainability. From the pioneering first-generation Insight to the latest hybrid and electric models, Honda continues to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency and environmental performance. As the company moves towards its ambitious electrification goals, hybrid-electric vehicles will continue to play a vital role in its strategy, offering consumers a compelling combination of performance, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
