SHERIDAN, WYOMING – August 13, 2024 – Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is set to make a historic appearance at the 73rd Annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with the North American debut of its groundbreaking 1984 HP-X Concept car. This marks a significant milestone, representing the first Japanese concept vehicle to be showcased at this prestigious event in over five decades.

The HP-X, an acronym for "Honda Pininfarina eXperimental," first graced the automotive world at the 1984 Turin Auto Show. The radical wedge-shaped concept, meticulously handcrafted by the renowned Italian design house Pininfarina, served as a precursor to the development of Honda's legendary first-generation NSX supercar.

Following an extensive restoration at Pininfarina's atelier in Italy, the HP-X is poised to take its place in the "Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars and Prototypes Class" at Pebble Beach on August 18th. Dave Marek, Acura's Executive Creative Director and an honorary Pebble Beach Concours judge, remarked, "The HP-X had an undeniable impact on the industry, highlighting our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in automotive design."

The HP-X, far more than a mere design exercise, was a technological tour de force. It incorporated advanced aerodynamics with ground effects and innovative cooling solutions for its mid-mounted, 2.0-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine, derived from Honda's F2 racing program. The car's futuristic design featured a jet-fighter-style removable canopy and explored the use of cutting-edge materials like honeycomb panels, carbon fiber, and Kevlar to minimize weight and maximize performance.

Its interior was equally forward-thinking, with an emphasis on ergonomics and functionality. Honda's "Electronic Drive Support System" previewed features that are now commonplace, such as real-time telemetry, GPS navigation, and even road condition warnings.

Felix Kilbertus, Pininfarina's Chief Creative Officer, stated, "The HP-X is an ideal example of Pininfarina's unique ability to present innovative ideas through concept cars that set future trends... The HP-X did not go into production as such, but its influence on subsequent Honda models and the broader automotive landscape is undeniable."

The HP-X's appearance at Pebble Beach is a testament to Honda's enduring legacy of innovation. This concept car, conceived 40 years ago, continues to inspire automotive designers and engineers today. Its presence at this esteemed event not only celebrates its historical significance but also underscores the profound impact it has had on the evolution of automotive design and technology.
