SHERIDAN, WYOMING – July 17, 2025 – With only two quick 15-minute charging stops, two Mercedes-Benz VLE test vehicles have successfully completed a challenging long-distance journey from Stuttgart to Rome, proving their readiness for everyday family adventures and long-haul trips. The electric vans covered nearly 1,100 kilometers (about 683 miles) under real-life driving conditions, tackling winding Alpine roads, bustling highways, and narrow city streets with confidence.
A Real-World Test of Efficiency and Comfort
The journey put the Mercedes-Benz VLE’s new Van Electric Architecture (VEA) to the test. Designed to optimize electric drivetrain performance, energy recuperation, and thermal management, the VLE delivered outstanding results:
- Completed the 1,090-kilometer (about 677 miles) trip in approximately 13 hours of steady traffic.
- Required just two brief 15-minute charging stops along the way.
- Maintained a consistent cabin temperature of 72°F, despite outside conditions ranging from 52°F in Stuttgart to 91°F in Rome.
“The rear-axle steering proved its worth on the winding roads and narrow streets of Italian cities, ensuring stress-free handling in everyday life,” noted the development team.
Everyday Driving Confidence with Long-Distance Capabilities
The test drive wasn’t just about range. Mercedes-Benz focused on the everyday usability of the VLE, especially in demanding conditions. Dr. Andreas Zygan, Head of Development Mercedes-Benz Vans, Mercedes-Benz AG, emphasized this achievement, stating,
“Our future MPVs have once again impressively demonstrated their suitability for everyday use on the long-distance route. With just two short charging stops from Stuttgart to the Alps to Rome – the Mercedes-Benz VLE demonstrates impressive efficiency of the new Van Electric Architecture.”
Testing Beyond the Lab
Mercedes-Benz integrates extensive real-world testing with advanced digital simulations. The Stuttgart-to-Rome drive is part of a broader validation program that spans various climates and terrains. The VLE’s testing history includes:
- A journey from Stuttgart to the North Cape in Norway.
- Harsh winter trials in Sweden in early 2025.
- Now, a demanding Alpine route to Italy’s capital city.
These efforts help Mercedes-Benz ensure that its vehicles meet high expectations before reaching customers.
A New Era of Electric Vans on the Horizon
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch its modular and scalable Van Architecture in 2026 — a platform designed for both luxurious private Grand Limousines and versatile commercial vans.
- The VLE will serve families, VIP shuttle services, and adventure seekers, offering space for up to eight passengers.
- The VLS will establish a new benchmark for luxury in electric mobility.
For the first time, Mercedes-Benz plans to bring its all-electric midsize luxury vans — the Grand Limousines — to customers in the U.S., Canada, and China.
The Road to Tomorrow Starts Here
With the VLE’s real-world performance shining on European roads, Mercedes-Benz showcases a clear vision for future mobility — blending style, functionality, and reliability in every journey.
