SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Jan. 23, 2025 – Volkswagen is marking the 50th anniversary of its iconic Polo model with a special exhibition at the Bremen Classic Motorshow. The event, which takes place from January 31st to February 2nd, 2025, will showcase two significant first-generation Polos: a 1975 Polo L and a rare 1977 hill climb Polo.
A Look Back at the First Generation
The Polo L, finished in Oceanic Blue, exemplifies the humble beginnings of this versatile small car. Launched in 1975, the Polo L was a compact and functional vehicle, measuring just 3.5 meters in length. Its 0.9-liter engine delivered 29 kW (40 PS), propelling the lightweight 685 kg car to a top speed of 132 km/h.
Despite its small size, the Polo L offered surprising practicality. "Small size. Large space” was how Volkswagen described it, highlighting its ability to accommodate four passengers and a generous 900 liters of cargo with the rear seats folded down. This combination of efficiency, practicality, and affordability laid the foundation for the Polo's enduring success.
A Sporting Heritage
Alongside the Polo L, Volkswagen is showcasing a unique piece of Polo history: a 1977 hill climb Polo. This modified racing variant, with its wider track, lowered suspension, and powerful 1.3-liter engine producing 81 kW (110 PS), highlights the sporty potential that has always been a part of the Polo's DNA.
After a meticulous two-year restoration, this one-of-a-kind Polo returned to competitive racing in 2022, participating in the Osnabrück hill climb race as part of the International Hill Climb Cup.
Five Decades of Success
Over six generations, the Polo has consistently delivered quality, innovation, and affordable mobility. With over 20 million units sold worldwide, it has become a true automotive icon.
"Quality, innovative spirit, versatility, comfort and economy have characterised all six model generations of the Polo right up to the present day – making it a national and international bestseller with 20 million units sold," says Volkswagen.
