SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 21, 2025 - Volkswagen launches future-focused initiative with new Amarok for South America
A regionally tailored approach for long-term impact
Volkswagen is driving its global future plan forward with a bold investment of 580 million USD in Argentina. The funding will support the development and production of a new generation Amarok pick-up truck—designed from South America, for South America—at the Pacheco plant starting in 2027. This move not only reaffirms the company's commitment to regional markets but also strengthens its presence in the strategically vital mid-size pick-up segment.
“This investment strengthens our position”
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and Head of the Brand Group Core, emphasized the significance of this initiative:
“Regional growth and localisation are important elements of our global plan for the future. This investment strengthens our position in a region that is strategically important for the Volkswagen brand. The new Amarok will be developed, designed and produced in South America, for South America. This means that it will be perfectly aligned with the specific needs of our customers in this market.”
Pacheco plant enters a new era
The Pacheco plant, already a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s South American operations, will receive upgrades to support the next-gen Amarok. With over 770,000 Amarok units produced to date, the facility is set to enhance its capabilities through new production technology, optimized digital processes, and energy-efficient systems—ensuring long-term sustainability.
“Argentina is a key component”
Alexander Seitz, CEO Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Latin America, echoed the importance of the local investment:
“Argentina is a key component of our South American strategy. This investment underlines our confidence in the country’s industrial capabilities. The new Amarok sets new standards in terms of performance, innovation and sustainability.”
Heritage meets innovation
Marcellus Puig, President and CEO of Volkswagen Argentina, highlighted the blend of tradition and technology in the upcoming model:
“The Amarok has been a symbol of Volkswagen's strength in Argentina. It is a key element of the brand's history in the country, an essential part of our present, and will continue to be so in the future. This new model will combine Volkswagen's design and DNA — backed by 15 years of experience and more than 770,000 Amarok’s proudly produced at our Pacheco plant — with cutting-edge software and advanced technology, resulting in a disruptive and competitive product for the modern market.”
Volkswagen’s roadmap to global leadership
This initiative is part of Volkswagen’s broader ‘Zukunft Volkswagen’ [Future Volkswagen] strategy—established in partnership with employee representatives in late 2024. The roadmap includes three core pillars:
- Advance: Targeted expansion of the current model range to boost competitiveness.
- Attack: Rollout of nine new models in Europe by 2027, including budget-friendly electric vehicles.
- Achieve: Aiming for global technology leadership in volume manufacturing by 2030.
A future shaped by local excellence
While the South American Amarok will be uniquely tailored to the region, existing production in South Africa will continue to support global markets. This dual-track approach reinforces Volkswagen’s vision of combining local adaptation with global reliability.
