DAHON's New Tech Suite Makes Folding Bikes 33% Stiffer

Sacramento – September 20, 2026 -- Folding bike maker DAHON has unveiled a new engineering methodology called DAHON-V tech, designed to fix a long-standing problem in the folding bike category: frames that flex, hinges that loosen, and drivetrains that buckle under load.

DAHON tested more than 40 bikes to find what separates a flexy folder from a fast one

The company's R&D team ran comparative tests across competitor and in-house models, measuring frame and seatpost rigidity, overall bike stiffness, and dynamic rocking behavior. Dr. David Hon, Founder and CEO of DAHON, said the resulting DAHON-V tech suite combines physics, computerized finite element analysis (FEA), and strain gauges to test the riding stiffness of bike frames.

The fix raises frame stiffness by 33% and adds up to 15% more riding speed

Two components emerged from the research: DELTECH cable and the Super Downtube. Together, they raise frame stiffness by 33% and improve the transfer of pedaling power into real-world speed by 5% to 15%, depending on rider weight, terrain, and wheel size, according to DAHON.

A new heavy-duty line targets riders up to 330 pounds

Applying the new tech, DAHON has released the Mariner Heavy Duty Series in two versions, the Mariner HD and Mariner XL, both built on 20-inch wheels. The bikes carry a payload capacity of up to 330 lb (150 kg), with frames tested at 50% above standard city-bike load limits and put through 100,000 stress cycles for fatigue validation. Both models come with a Shimano 8-speed drivetrain and disc brakes for handling on urban and mixed terrain.

The engineering has already picked up industry recognition

The Mariner HD won the d&i Award 2026 at the Taipei Cycle Show, while DAHON's ultra-lightweight e-bike, the K-Feather, took the Gold Award at China Cycle 2024.
