St. Petersburg – September 13, 2026 -- Amped Fitness named Joel "J.D." Valdez the $10,000 Grand Prize winner of its first Amped Summer Creator Challenge, a three-month contest that drew more than 2,000 creators competing for a $25,000 total prize pool.
Over 100 million views flooded in from thousands of submitted videos
Launched in June as the debut activation of the Amped Creator Program, the challenge invited members to document their personal experiences with the gym brand. Content ranged from transformations and training milestones to friendships and setbacks, collectively racking up more than 100 million views across social media. Amped Fitness distributed the $25,000 prize pool across 12 winners over the course of the summer.
A 2021 shooting survivor's recovery story stood out among thousands of entries
Valdez, a father and business owner from Houston, was shot six times by a stranger in 2021 while leaving a grocery store. He suffered gunshot wounds to his neck and shoulder and was hospitalized awaiting surgery as Houston-area hospitals faced pandemic-era capacity strain, a recovery that FOX 26 Houston documented at the time.
His Amped Summer submission traced the years of physical pain and mental toll that followed, and his gradual return to the gym. He described progressing from lifting five- and 10-pound weights to nearly bench pressing his own body weight again.
Gym wall slogans became daily reminders during his recovery
Valdez said messages posted inside the gym helped him track his progress. "What helps a lot is the things that you guys have chosen to put up on the walls. 'You vs. You, Stronger than Yesterday.' Every single time I'm in there, I look at it and it's a reminder," he said.
Danyal Ali, Chief Marketing Officer of Amped Fitness, said more than 2,000 creators opened up their lives for the challenge, but Valdez's journey was one the brand couldn't forget. Valdez said the recognition confirmed for him that his purpose going forward is to help others.
Amped Fitness plans to continue expanding the Amped Creator Program following the challenge's conclusion.
