Washington – September 17, 2026 -- The SuperH 5K Run, Walk & Wheel returns for its 23rd year on Sunday, Sept. 20, kicking off at 8 a.m. at OneLife Fitness in Tysons, Virginia, with proceeds funding adaptive sports programs at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital.
Participants can choose between a full 5K course or a one-mile fun run, all in support of no-cost adaptive sports and fitness services for MedStar NRH patients.
Harry and Renie Freedman launched the event after a workplace accident recovery
The Freedmans started SuperH as a way to give back to the hospital following Harry's recovery from a workplace injury. Over the past 23 years, the event has raised more than $1 million for adaptive sports and fitness programs.
This year's fundraising target is $150,000
Money raised covers coaching, training, equipment and travel assistance for participants in activities including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair tennis, adaptive cycling, sled hockey, boccia ball and adaptive rowing.
Programs range from beginner level to a nationally ranked Division I team
MedStar NRH's adaptive sports offerings serve all skill levels, including a path to a Division I wheelchair basketball team ranked second in the nation. Tournaments, camps and other community events run year-round.
Families describe the programs as building confidence and community
Marta and Jose Icochea, parents of participant Adrian, said adaptive sports have helped their son build confidence, independence and a sense of belonging, while giving their family a supportive community.
Harsh Thakkar, director of community engagement and quality of life services for MedStar Health, said the programs create a welcoming, inclusive space and that funds raised through events like SuperH allow the hospital to help a large number of people.
Harry Freedman, the event's co-founder and namesake, said he is proud to watch the programs grow over 23 years and looks forward to the post-race celebration, which includes a live band, food and swag for participants.
