Garmin's New GMI 40 Puts Boat Data on a Sleek 4.3-Inch Touchscreen

Olathe, Kan. – September 04, 2026 -- Garmin has launched the GMI 40, a multipurpose marine instrument with a 4.3-inch, high-resolution color touchscreen, priced at $599.99, with bundles ranging from $1,099.99 to $1,899.99.

The touchscreen replaces cluttered dashboards with one clear display

The GMI 40 features an edge-to-edge glass touchscreen designed to give sailors, cruisers and coastal anglers an uninterrupted view of live boating data. Garmin says the compact design fits cleanly at the helm and complements its GPSMAP chartplotters.

It connects to existing onboard electronics and wearables

The device integrates with compatible marine electronics through the NMEA 2000 network and Garmin's own BlueNet network. It also connects wirelessly to gWind sensors, marine remote controls and Garmin quatix marine smartwatches, letting boaters share data across devices in real time.

Software updates are handled through Garmin's free ActiveCaptain app. Boaters upgrading from the older GMI 20 model can buy an adapter plate to fit the GMI 40 into an existing dashboard cutout without new cutting.

Bundles add deeper wind and water readings

Beyond the standalone unit, Garmin offers bundles that pair the GMI 40 with additional sensors. A gWind wired or wireless transducer adds a three-bladed anemometer for wind speed accuracy and a twin-fin design for a more stable True Wind Angle reading. Other bundle options include a DST820 thru-hull smart transducer, or a GDT 43 (depth and temperature) and GST 43 (speed and temperature) transducer pairing for more detailed readings below the waterline.

"Whether sailing, fishing the coast or cruising for the weekend, you need a compact instrument that's simple to operate and fits cleanly at the helm," said Susan Lyman, Garmin's Vice President of Global Consumer Sales & Marketing.

Garmin reports it was named Manufacturer of the Year by the National Marine Electronics Association for the 11th consecutive year. The GMI 40 is available now.
