Telekom Takes Innovative Approach to Network Expansion in Hamburg

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

SHERIDAN, WYOMING - September 23, 2024 - Deutsche Telekom is taking a novel approach to address the challenge of finding new cell tower locations in Hamburg's Niendorf district. The company has launched a campaign using posters and newspaper ads to directly appeal to property owners and landlords. This unconventional strategy comes as the search for suitable sites for new mobile communications infrastructure remains a complex and time-consuming process.

Addressing Capacity Demands and Network Quality

While Hamburg-Niendorf already boasts a well-developed mobile network, Telekom is proactively seeking additional locations to meet future capacity requirements and ensure optimal network quality. "Last year alone, data traffic on our network increased by another 30 percent," emphasizes Kristofer Steinijans, Head of EMVU and Municipalities. "To guarantee a stable and fast connection even at peak times and to offer innovative technologies such as 5G nationwide, additional sites are necessary. The network must therefore be continuously expanded to keep pace with people's wishes and needs."

Adapting to a Changing Urban Landscape

The dynamic nature of a major metropolis like Hamburg, with ongoing construction, urban densification, and building demolitions, necessitates the constant search for new locations to maintain and enhance the city's mobile connectivity.

A Win-Win Situation

Providing a site for a mobile communications system benefits the network expansion in Germany, and it's not without its rewards. Telekom offers long-term, locally customary rent for these locations. Steinijans assures, "We will examine every offer that comes in for the Niendorf district and other Hamburg areas. Whether it's a rooftop location or an open space."

Positive Response to Previous Efforts

Telekom's pilot project last year, which employed a similar poster campaign in 12 cities under the motto "Our antennas are looking for a home," yielded overwhelmingly positive results. Over 1,800 locations were submitted nationwide, with 140 currently under further consideration.

Commitment to Network Expansion

Telekom currently operates 610 sites in Hamburg, achieving 100 percent household coverage. The company plans to add another 90 sites by 2026, with LTE or 5G expansions planned at over 400 existing antenna masts. This initiative in Niendorf is part of Telekom's broader commitment to expanding its network infrastructure across Germany. The company currently operates more than 35,000 mobile sites nationwide and adds around 1,500 new sites annually.

Call to Action

Telekom is encouraging property owners in Hamburg-Niendorf and other areas to consider contributing to Germany's digital infrastructure by offering suitable locations for mobile communications systems.
