Hamburg – September 13, 2026 -- Bulova is releasing a limited-edition version of its Lunar Pilot watch, the model worn by Apollo 15 commander David Scott on the Moon in 1971, with a dial coated in one of the darkest materials available to consumers.
The dial absorbs 99.4 percent of light
The new "Black Hole" edition uses Musou Black, an ultra-black acrylic paint developed in Japan, on its dial. Bulova says the coating absorbs 99.4 percent of incoming light, giving the watch face a flat, void-like appearance rather than a typical glossy black finish.
It's the smallest Lunar Pilot case Bulova has made
At 41.2mm, this marks the first time Bulova has offered the Lunar Pilot lineage in a case smaller than its existing 45mm and 43.5mm versions. The stainless steel case carries a matte black PVD coating, paired with a polished bezel and chronograph pushers for contrast. Water resistance is rated to 10 bar, twice that of earlier Lunar Pilot models.
Inside runs Bulova's high-frequency in-house quartz caliber
The watch is powered by the NP20 movement, a High Precision Quartz caliber running at 262 kHz. Bulova says this delivers accuracy within a few seconds per year and allows the time and stopwatch second hands to sweep smoothly rather than tick.
The caseback honors the Apollo 15 mission
Engraved on the caseback are the limited-edition number, the words "The Black Hole," an astronaut figure, and the date of the Apollo 15 Moon landing. The dial itself features a gunmetal-style tachymeter scale and blue-glowing Super-LumiNova markers.
Only 6,000 will be made worldwide
Bulova is capping global production at 6,000 units. The watch ships in a collector's box that includes a travel case and a travel alarm clock styled after a Bulova/Accutron cockpit instrument flown during the Apollo 15 mission. It arrives at retailers and on de.bulova.com starting September 2026, priced at a suggested €1,495.
