Miami Beach's Mount Sinai Ranks #1 in Florida for GI Surgery

MIAMI BEACH – October 28, 2026 -- Patients in South Florida choosing a hospital for stomach and bowel surgery now have a data point: Mount Sinai Medical Center ranks first in the state for gastrointestinal surgery, according to Healthgrades, the site Americans use to search for doctors and hospitals.

Mount Sinai lands in the top 5 in Florida across six categories

Beyond its #1 spot in gastrointestinal surgery, the hospital placed #3 for cranial neurosurgery. It ranked #5 for cardiac care, cardiology services, neurosciences and stroke care.

Mount Sinai has been named one of America's 100 Best Hospitals, the top 2% nationally, for three consecutive years. It also earned four specialty distinctions: Cardiac Care (2027), Pulmonary Care (2026-2027), Stroke Care (2024-2027) and Gastrointestinal Surgery (2024-2027).

Nine Specialty Excellence Awards and 15 five-star ratings add to the haul

The awards span cardiac, neurosciences, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and critical care. Mount Sinai sits in the top 5% nationwide for cardiology services, neurosciences, cranial neurosurgery, stroke treatment, overall pulmonary services and gastrointestinal surgery. It also collected 15 Five-Star Ratings across high-impact procedures and conditions.

Some results have lasted for years. The hospital has earned five stars for treating gastrointestinal bleeding for 11 consecutive years, and for stroke and sepsis for 10.

Gino R. Santorio, President and CEO, credited the physicians, nurses and care teams who deliver results "one patient at a time, year after year."

Healthgrades scores outcomes, not reputation

Healthgrades says it does not rely on surveys or reputation. It evaluates objective clinical outcomes, including risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates, across more than 30 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide.

Hospital choice carries measurable stakes

Healthgrades' 2027 analysis estimates that if all hospitals had performed at the level of five-star facilities during 2023-2025, 227,229 lives could have been saved and 158,138 complications avoided. Those figures are three-year estimates based on MedPAR data and cover Medicare patients only.

Alana Biggers, MD, MPH, a medical advisor at Healthgrades, said that finding a hospital that excels at a given procedure or treatment can change a patient's health trajectory.
