Denver – September 10, 2026 -- Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre is marking its 85th anniversary this year, with a 2026 concert calendar that includes Widespread Panic, Andrea Bocelli and Brandi Carlile.
The venue opened in 1941 after four years of Depression-era labor
Red Rocks held a pre-opening ceremony on June 8, 1941, honoring the 500 men of the Civilian Conservation Corps who spent four years building the amphitheater. The official opening gala followed on June 15, 1941, featuring a Native American ceremony and the Denver Municipal Chorus, and was broadcast nationally on CBS, drawing coverage from Time Magazine.
The rock formations date back 300 million years
The sandstone that shapes the venue's natural acoustics formed when Colorado sat as an island surrounded by shifting seas. The site later served as traditional gathering ground for the Ute, Cheyenne and Arapahoe peoples before the City of Denver purchased 675 acres in 1927 and began construction with a CCC camp in 1935.
Awards keep piling up decades later
Pollstar Magazine renamed its top small outdoor venue prize the "Red Rocks Award" in 1999 after the amphitheater won it eleven straight times, removing Red Rocks from future contention. Billboard named it the second-most-visited venue in the U.S. in December 2025, Pollstar called it the world's most-visited amphitheater, and Rolling Stone ranked it the country's "Hottest Music Venue" in April 2023.
The Beatles played here in 1964 -- and it didn't sell out
On August 26, 1964, the Beatles performed at Red Rocks with tickets priced at $6.60, the only date on their tour that failed to sell out. U2's stormy June 5 show became the basis for their landmark 1983 concert film "Under the Blood Red Sky," and the Dave Matthews Band's 1997 release "Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95" helped cement the venue's reputation for live albums. More than 20 albums have been recorded there in total.
Visitors can hike, dine and climb 193 steps
Beyond concerts, the park offers trails including the 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail, the 2.3-mile Mount Vernon Creek Trail Loop and the 3.3-mile Red Rocks and Morrison Slide Loop. The venue itself holds 9,525 hand-carved seats spanning roughly 2.7 miles, reachable by climbing 193 steps from the stage to the upper plaza, with food available at the Ship Rock Grille terrace.
The 2026 anniversary season books legendary names
Widespread Panic plays June 26-28, 2026, marking the band's 76th through 78th consecutive sold-out Red Rocks shows. Zeds Dead headlines "Deadrocks XII" July 2-3, Wynonna Judd and Melissa Etheridge perform with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on August 2, Brandi Carlile plays September 11-13, and Andrea Bocelli closes out September 20-21.
