Munich – October 28, 2026 -- Dog and cat owners can now insure vet bills at up to four times the official fee schedule: Münchener Verein has launched two pet health tariffs, "HundGesund" and "KatzeGesund", each with an optional surgery-only version.
The insurer cites rising vet costs. It points to the 2022 revision of the German veterinary fee schedule (GOT) and to more advanced treatment methods in veterinary medicine.
Two cover levels, two product types
Customers choose between full health insurance and surgery-only insurance. Each comes in two variants. "Premium" offers unlimited cost coverage, while "Kompakt" covers costs up to 3,000 euros per year. Reimbursement reaches up to four times the GOT rate, which matters for emergency treatment in animal clinics.
Insurer waives its right to cancel after a claim
From the start of the contract, Münchener Verein gives up its right to terminate the policy once a claim has been made. Customers also get an extended 45-day withdrawal period. After three claim-free years, a no-claims bonus provides a voucher of up to 500 euros toward the deductible.
Core benefits go beyond emergencies
- 100 percent reimbursement for outpatient and inpatient treatment and for surgery
- Free choice of vet and clinic, with direct billing possible
- Worldwide cover during temporary stays abroad and trips
- Costs for MRI and CT diagnostics and for tooth extractions
- Prostheses and alternative treatments such as physiotherapy and acupuncture
An optional preventive budget of 200 euros per year covers routine costs: vaccinations, worming, tick protection, dental cleaning, claw clipping, the EU pet passport, microchipping and voluntary check-ups.
The "Premium" tariff adds a Plus module. It includes gold acupuncture, a funeral cost allowance of up to 300 euros, and search, recovery and repatriation costs abroad of up to 1,500 euros. It also pays up to 1,500 euros in trip cancellation costs after accident-related surgery, and covers pet boarding if the owner is hospitalized as an inpatient.
Customer portal adds round-the-clock telemedicine
Policyholders can view their documents and submit vet invoices through an online portal. The portal also gives access to telemedicine, with a professional initial assessment by smartphone around the clock. Applications use a simplified risk check.
Manuel Jäschke, head of the pet business unit, said AI-supported vet services and telemedicine are meant to speed up first care for animals and cut claim costs for owners. CEO Dr. Rainer Reitzler said the tariffs respond to rising vet costs and aim to give owners a sense of security.
