Dallas – – October 06, 2026 -- Southwest Airlines has launched a plugin inside ChatGPT that lets travelers search and shop for Southwest flights directly within the chatbot, marking the first phase of an AI-powered booking rollout built with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services.
Southwest becomes the first U.S. airline to offer a dedicated ChatGPT plugin
The tool allows customers to discover destinations and explore flight options without leaving the ChatGPT interface, giving Southwest a presence earlier in the travel-planning process. The company describes it as a step toward a simpler, more direct path from initial inspiration to an actual booking.
Southwest frames the launch as a test for future AI features
Sabrina Callahan, Southwest's Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, said the airline is adapting to how customers now plan trips and is using the plugin to experiment with AI while keeping its customer-first approach. Lauren Woods, the company's Chief Information Officer, said the project is meant to create a secure, scalable AI foundation that lets Southwest roll out new capabilities more quickly over time.
OpenAI and AWS supply the underlying technology
Southwest built the plugin by combining OpenAI's AI tools with AWS cloud infrastructure, pairing those systems with its own customer data to shape the travel-planning experience. The airline says this integration is designed to expand gradually, with additional AI-powered features planned for later phases.
Customers can access the plugin by enabling it within ChatGPT, where they can search Southwest routes and view booking options before moving to the airline's own booking channels.
