Wood Stove Rules in Austria: What to Check Before Lighting Up

Vienna – October 29, 2026 -- Anyone heating with a wood stove in Austria needs a chimney sweep's assessment first, and usually has to register the stove with the municipality and get the landlord's consent. Energy provider Grünwelt Energie has outlined what households should know about the rules and the environmental side of heating with wood.

Chimney sweeps check safety before the first fire

The chimney sweep (Rauchfangkehrer) judges whether the structural requirements are met and whether exhaust gases can escape safely. Sufficient combustion air and safety clearances must also be in place.

Requirements differ by federal state and stove model, according to Grünwelt's experts. In most cases, a notification to the municipality is required, along with landlord approval for tenants.

marktguru's New AI Chatbot Turns Fridge Photos Into Deals

Munich/Vienna – October 29, 2026 -- Shoppers in Germany and Austria can now ask an AI chatbot where to find nearby supermarket deals and whether a price is actually good. The feature, called "Frag den Guru" ("Ask the Guru"), is built into the free marktguru app for Android and iOS.

Chatbot opens with one tap and accepts text, voice or photos

A blue marktguru icon at the bottom right of the app opens the chat. Users can type a request or speak it. They can also upload a photo of their fridge contents or a handwritten shopping list to start the conversation.

From there, the chatbot picks out matching offers and links straight to the product or the relevant supermarket flyer. Suggestions follow the postcode saved in the app, so they reflect stores near the user.

5 Pediatrician Tips for a Safer, Healthier Halloween

PITTSBURGH – October 29, 2026 -- Pedestrian deaths are nearly 45% higher on Halloween than on other evenings around the same time of year, so Allegheny Health Network (AHN) pediatricians are urging families to take five precautions before kids hit the streets this weekend.

Bright colors and supervision cut pedestrian risk

The 45% figure comes from the Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics. AHN advises dressing children in bright or reflective clothing and choosing costumes that fit well to reduce tripping and falls.

Children under 12, or those who need an extra set of eyes, should be supervised. Stick to well-lit streets with sidewalks, cross at designated intersections, and show your child how to dial 911 in an emergency.

Breast Cancer Radiation: Why Patients Are Asking About Proton Therapy

Somerset, N.J. – October 29, 2026 -- Women diagnosed with breast cancer, and the people supporting them, can ask whether proton therapy is an option if radiation is recommended, says ProCure Proton Therapy Center in New Jersey. For some patients, it may reduce radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue, including the heart and lungs.

A study found fewer lung changes and skin reactions with protons

Research published earlier this year in Breast Cancer Research examined 8,189 breast cancer patients who received radiation after surgery. Of those, 501 were treated with proton therapy.

Lung changes visible on imaging occurred in 5.8% of the proton group, compared with 10.0% of the conventional radiation group. Skin reactions were also less frequent with protons, at 13.4% versus 20.9%.
