Beijing – October 19, 2026 -- China's Shanxi province brought hand-knotted brooches, colored glazeware and lacquerware to more than 100 foreign diplomats at a Geneva reception in late September. Some guests left talking about visiting.

Datong artist made edelweiss brooches for Swiss guests on the spot

The reception was hosted by the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva. Knotting artist Yang Xuefei of Datong displayed 48 brooches made with 'Datong knotting', a recognized intangible cultural heritage (ICH) craft. She also made several pieces on-site for Swiss visitors.

Those pieces featured the edelweiss, a national symbol of Switzerland. They also carried ornamental flying ribbons inspired by statues at the Yungang Grottoes. Yang and her colleagues have created more than 500 cultural products using the technique and have shown them in a number of countries.

493 People Form a 39-Metre Human Grapevine in Moldova

Moldova – – October 19, 2026 -- A total of 493 participants formed a human grapevine about 39 metres long at Moldova's National Wine Day, a record attempt that became one of the festival's highlights.

The formation followed a design approved by Guinness World Records

The shape was approved in advance by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM. Participants recreated the roots, trunk, branches, six grape clusters, six leaves and vine tendrils. Different clothing colours marked each element so the grapevine could be recognised from the air.

QR codes and fixed positions kept the count accurate

Every participant was individually registered and assigned a fixed position. Entry and counting were strictly controlled, and QR-code scanning helped prevent double counting.

HiBy RS2 II: Flagship DARWIN III Hi-Fi Sound for US$439

Lewes – October 19, 2026 -- HiBy's new RS2 II portable Hi-Fi player costs US$439 in its aluminum alloy edition, weighs 156g and uses the same DARWIN III audio architecture as the company's flagship RS8 II.

A flagship audio engine runs on an FPGA with 40 DSP units

DARWIN III is built around a newly developed FPGA digital engine with more than 35K logic units and 40 high-speed DSP units. A high-precision R2R resistor network handles digital-to-analog conversion, which HiBy says helps reduce high-frequency noise introduced by digital modulation.

Wealth Tax Fear Drives Wealthy Brits Toward Portugal

LONDON – October 19, 2026 -- Taxation is the top reason for 82.6% of wealthy UK investors who are considering a second residency or citizenship, and almost three in four of them name Portugal as a top-two destination, according to a new survey from investment migration firm La Vida.

The 2026 UK Investor Survey ran from 29 September to 8 October 2026. La Vida invited more than 5,000 investors who had enquired about residency or citizenship by investment over the last decade. Respondents averaged around £9 million in wealth, which CEO Paul Williams described as more than 20 times the national average.

Wealth tax is the biggest fear

Respondents were most likely to be pushed out of the UK by a wealth tax, ahead of income tax and inheritance tax. Political concerns (56.5%) and cost of living (52.2%) followed taxation. Concern about crime and security fell from 59.3% in the 2025 survey to 37% this year.

What Inspectors Check Before Refilling Your Propane Tank

Port Neches – October 18, 2026 -- Before a propane supplier can legally refill your cylinder, federal rules require a check of its stamped markings and a visual inspection for damage, and Texas owners whose tanks fail may be turned away.

Stamped markings must be reviewed before every refill

The U.S. Department of Transportation regulates the manufacture, marking, and maintenance of portable pressurized cylinders. Under its rules, each cylinder must carry identifying information stamped into the collar or handle area: the manufacture date, the cylinder specification, and any requalification dates from earlier inspections. Inspectors look for five warning signs

The visual check is designed to catch conditions that make a cylinder unsafe to pressurize. Inspectors look for:
