Why Your Hearing Aid Whistles, and How to Stop It

Franklin, Tenn. – October 30, 2026 -- A whistling hearing aid is usually not broken. According to a HelloNation article featuring Franklin audiologist Dr. Elizabeth Welch, the noise typically traces back to fit, earwax or settings that a clinic can fix.

Feedback happens when amplified sound leaks back into the microphone

Whistling, also called feedback, occurs when amplified sound escapes the ear canal and loops back into the device's microphone. The result is a sharp whistle or other distorted noise.

Poor fit is a leading cause of whistling

A hearing aid that does not sit securely lets sound escape. The shape of the ear canal can change with aging, weight fluctuations or ear infections, which makes leaks more likely. Custom earmolds and regular professional adjustments keep the fit snug and improve sound clarity.

Boey: The 'Trial Run' Botulinum Toxin That Fades in Weeks

New Patient Film Gives Rare Disease HPP a Human Face

Munich – October 30, 2026 -- A new international patient film released for HPP Awareness Day follows three people living with hypophosphatasia (HPP): Antje from Germany, Mario from Brazil and Lisa from the USA.

The three describe years of symptoms, uncertainty and a long road to diagnosis. They also show how the rare inherited disease can affect social life, family and plans for the future, and what relief the correct diagnosis brought them.

HPP stems from low activity of one enzyme

The condition is caused by inherited, reduced activity of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase. Because the enzyme plays a role in many processes in the body, HPP can appear at any age and in very different ways. Symptoms range from muscle and joint pain, fatigue and limited mobility to repeated fractures. Depending on severity, physical stamina and independence can be sharply restricted.

Clocks Fall Back, but Americans Gain Only 11 Minutes of Sleep

BOSTON – October 30, 2026 -- When the clocks fall back on the night of Sunday, November 1, Americans will sleep only about 11 minutes longer than on a typical Saturday, according to new Withings data, and by the following weekend they sleep less than usual.

Withings data shows the bonus hour mostly disappears

Withings analyzed 237,480 nights of sleep data from US users aged 18 and over, covering the autumn clock changes of 2023, 2024 and 2025. On the night itself, sleep was also more broken than usual, with slightly more frequent wake-ups.

In the week afterward, people woke around 16 minutes earlier and went to bed around 15 minutes earlier by the clock. By the next Saturday they slept about four minutes less than usual, with a slightly lower sleep score. Sleep quality returned to its pre-change level over the following two weeks.

In Europe, where clocks change a week earlier, people gain between 10 and 15 minutes.

It is described as the first to assess cord plasma ALA proportions against cognitive trajectories in offspring.
