Anuga Frozen Food: international gathering for the frozen food industry in Cologne

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

The trend for freshness, health and sustainability is making frozen products increasingly popular with consumers – Over 370 national and international exhibitors from the frozen food segment will be represented at the event

Consumers’ desire for fresh, healthy and sustainable food has grown even further during the coronavirus pandemic – much to the benefit of frozen products, which profited significantly from this trend.

Anuga Frozen Food from 9 to 13 October 2021 will once again provide an international business platform for the global frozen food industry and share insights into the latest industry developments. Anuga will highlight the transition in food behaviour with its key theme #transform. For the first time, the trade fair will be accompanied by its digital extension, Anuga @home, which will run from 11 to 13 October 2021. The digital edition of the event will showcase exhibitors and their solutions, thereby providing new global networking opportunities. In total, more than 4,000 suppliers from over 91 countries are expected to travel to Cologne for Anuga.

The list of the leading exhibitors appearing in Anuga Frozen Food features names such as Agristo, Alfa, Arabatzis, Ardo, Aviko, Boulangerie Neuhauser, erlenbacher, Lutosa, Pfalzgraf, Point of Food, Roncadin, Surgital, Stohos , viciunai and Virto. The companies opting for a digital-only presence are predominantly from outside Germany, but they also include German frozen food suppliers, such as the Frostkrone Food Group. According to the latest interim figures, more than 370 exhibitors in total will participate in Anuga Frozen Food. More registrations are expected to follow over the next weeks, in particular from the countries represented in national pavilions at the event. In addition, further frozen food suppliers will be appearing in Anuga Meat and Anuga Bread & Bakery. The selection of products on show in Anuga Frozen Food ranges from fish and meat, fruit and vegetables, ready meals, bread and baked goods, ice cream, pizza and potato products through to bulk quantities for customers in the communal catering and food service sectors. A number of suppliers with a focus on plant-based or alternative protein products, such as fish substitutes, will also be represented at this year’s Anuga.

The German frozen food market in 2020/21

Total volume sales of frozen food in Germany declined by 4.5 per cent in 2020 to 3.66 million tonnes (2019: 3.833 million tonnes). The total value of frozen food sales fell by 1.8 per cent to Euro 15.081 billion (2019: Euro 15.361 billion), according to figures from the German Frozen Food Institute (dti). Increased demand for frozen products and high acceptance among consumers resulted in extremely good performance in the in-store and home delivery segments, but this could not compensate for the collapse of the out of home (OOH) market.

In the in-store and home delivery segments, frozen food recorded extraordinary growth of 12.1 per cent in volume terms in 2020, with sales of 2.087 million tonnes (2019: 1.861 million tonnes). That is an absolute record for the entire frozen food category in the retail sector. Frozen food sales in the in-store and home delivery segments rose by 13.4 per cent to Euro 9.40 billion (2019: Euro 8.29 billion), clearly exceeding the nine-billion mark for the first time.

The OOH market recorded an unprecedented collapse due to the coronavirus pandemic: For the first time, the consistent winner in recent years had to face painful losses in various OOH segments due to the extended lockdowns from March 2020. Volume sales fell by 20.3 per cent to 1.573 million tonnes (2019: 1.973 million tonnes). Frozen food sales in the OOH market totalled Euro 5.68 billion in 2020, a decline of 19.6 per cent (2019: Euro 7.07 billion). Sales of all frozen food product groups in the OOH market experienced double-digit declines in 2020.

The German frozen food industry, a sector accustomed to success, had to face a significant setback that is entirely due to the extended closures of food service businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the crisis in the food service industry, per capita consumption of frozen food decreased by 2.1 kilograms in 2020 to 44.8 kilograms (2019: 46.9 kg). This represents a dramatic fall of a magnitude never seen before and an unexpected departure from the trend over the last 30 years.

Issues and trends

Cooking and food behaviour in Germany has changed considerably during the coronavirus pandemic, as is demonstrated by the TK-TRENDBAROMETER, a representative consumer survey conducted by the market research institute INNOFACT AG on behalf of the dti.

From consumers’ perspective, the three most important aspects in relation to food are the freshness of products (92%), a healthy diet (81%) and natural ingredients (81%). During the coronavirus pandemic, the importance of a healthy diet and the freshness of products increased for at least one-quarter of respondents. The trends for vegetarian (22%) and vegan (15%) food are much less significant than previously thought, with respondents rating these criteria as significantly less important. Consumers are not dogmatic here. However, almost half (49%) say that they would like to reduce their meat consumption, while as many as 58 per cent state that they would like to cut their sugar intake.

During the coronavirus pandemic, people have been cooking for themselves with fresh ingredients more often, as 41 per cent of respondents confirmed. Nearly one-third of respondents (31%) ordered takeaway food more frequently. A good quarter of respondents (26%) turned to delivery services more often. How consumers handle frozen food products has also changed for the better: 19 per cent of respondents said that they had been cooking for themselves using frozen ingredients more frequently. The popularity of cooking frozen meals increased considerably among 14 per cent of consumers.

As market developments have proved for years, frozen products have always been valued highly and viewed positively in Germany. Frozen products are not just an indispensable part of our diets today; they are also game changers in healthy and sustainable eating habits. Almost every household (98%) buys and uses frozen products – even in “normal” times. The share of heavy users – consumers who use frozen products at least once a month to several times a week – has continued to grow and currently stands at 78 per cent. The most popular product groups are vegetables/herbs (77%), fish (69%), potato products (65%), pizza (60%) and bread rolls (48%).

The international outlook for frozen food

According to the Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, the frozen food market amassed worldwide sales of US dollar 291.8 billion in 2019. It is estimated to reach US dollar 404.8 billion by 2027, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% between 2020 and 2027. The European frozen food market is forecast to reach US dollar 124.1 billion by 2027.

Events for the frozen food industry at Anuga

As a partner of Anuga Frozen Food and Anuga Culinary Concepts, the dti will once again be represented at a stand in Hall 4.2, B11/C10. The association’s trade fair stand is an established and popular point of contact for all its members as well as visitors and those with an interest in frozen food. This is where the German frozen food industry meets with visitors from across the world for industry discussions in the frozen food lounge.

TIEFKÜHL-STAR-NIGHT 2021

As part of the Anuga event programme, the dti, the trade journal Lebensmittel Praxis and Koelnmesse will present the awards for the TIEFKÜHL STARs on 11 October 2021 from 6 p.m. Guests from the industry and the retail trade and, most importantly, the nominated retailer teams are expected for TIEFKÜHL-STAR-NIGHT. Dr Tobias Wachinger, Senior Partner at McKinsey Munich, will give a talk on “The Crisis and the New Consumers: Lifestyle and Price Focus Will Be the Trends for 2021”. The organisers are looking forward to emotional moments and meeting up with the industry again in Cologne.

International Frozen Food Network

The dti will also be flying the flag for the frozen food industry on Anuga @home. It plans to host an inaugural round table with the International Frozen Food Network (IFFN), an umbrella organisation for frozen food trade associations from the US, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany. Taking “A Fresh Look at Healthy & Sustainable Frozen Foods” as its theme, the discussion will be hosted by John Saulnier of Frozen Foods Biz.

Frozen Food Round Table

In collaboration with the trade journal Lebensmittel Praxis (LP), the dti will host another round table on frozen food, which will be available to view on Anuga @home. Leading representatives from the frozen food industry and the retail trade will discuss the latest trends and challenges in the frozen food industry in a debate hosted by Andrea Kurtz (LP).

Sustainability congress

The dti will also support Anuga and the Center for Sustainable Corporate Leadership (ZNU) at Witten/Herdecke University in staging the conference SHAPING SUSTAINABILITY TOGETHER – The Entire Chain at a Glance on 13 October 2021 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The congress will highlight the economic benefits that sustainable management can bring at a company and product level.

Anuga Frozen Food 2021 will help shape the international exchange in the frozen food business. Its highest priority is providing a pleasant trade fair experience for its exhibitors and visitors. The dti as a representative for the entire German frozen food industry will provide an important contribution and highlight the benefits of frozen offerings.

Perfect duo: New Food Conference at Anuga 2021

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

Plant-based meets cellular agriculture: Two complementary approaches for a more resistant food system

COVID-19 has once again revealed the weaknesses and fragility of the global food supply chains. We are on the threshold of one of the fastest and far-reaching changes in the food system. The sales of plant-based products are exploding, whilst cellular agriculture and precision fermentation have the potential to change the way we grow our food for ever. In partnership with Anuga 2021, the New Food Conference is picking up on precisely this and is inviting food professionals from all over the world, both on-site in Cologne as well as across the digital platform, Anuga @home, to inform themselves about the progress of cultivated protein technologies from 10.-11.10.2021.

First-class speakers will give an insight into the possibilities and business opportunities of cellular agriculture as a unique complementary solution to plant-based products and with regards to the creation of a sustainable food system. This forward-looking section will enable the production of more tasty, safer, more affordable and more sustainable animal-based products and at the same time enable the creation of a new generation of products that mix plant-based and cultivated ingredients to offer the best from both worlds. The conference will focus on themes like the development of cell-based meat or fish (lab meat) as well as microorganism-based egg and dairy products. Consumer trends as well as ethical approaches will also be discussed.

Anuga, the world's largest trade fair for food and beverages, is for the first time thus placing the emphasis on themes revolving around cultivated meat (lab meat) and cultivated dairy products in line with its key topic "Transform" and related trends such as clean label, alternative meat proteins or plant-based proteins and foods.

Positive interim result for Anuga: Around 4,000 companies from 91 countries have currently already registered

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

With the aid of the new funding programme of the Federal Government, the leading global trade fair for food and beverages is supporting the re-start of German exhibitors at trade fairs

Anuga 2021 is ready to rare and is playing a key role in the successful re-start of the market. At the same time, the leading global trade fair for food and beverages is also setting new concept-related benchmarks: The leading global trade fair is combining the great strengths of a physical event with trailblazing digital features in the form of Anuga @home. The hybrid approach enables professionals from the food industry to discover attractive trade fair presences and products and connect with relevant contact partners via innovative channels. The hygiene concept ensures the greatest possible safety #B-SAFE4business | Anuga as well as the new Check | Anuga, which optimally regulates admission for all trade fair participants regarding COVID.

Anuga is currently recording a positive interim result: Around 4,000 companies from 91 countries have already registered and further registrations are expected particularly in the form of joint country participations. This year's Anuga won't quite match the full international scope of exhibitors compared to previous events due to the pandemic. However, all 10 trade shows are taking place and the entire grounds of Koelnmesse are covered. The country participations with the highest number of exhibitors come from Belgium, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Turkey and the USA.

Under the key theme "Transform", the leading global trade fair for food and beverages is picking up on trailblazing future themes this year and is presenting among others innovations from the cell-based proteins, meat substitute products, clean label, free-from, health and functional foods sections. The congresses that are being staged parallel to the trade fair also address the key topic. For example, the New Food Conference is celebrating its Anuga debut this year with a focus on cell-based proteins. What's more, the sustainability conference of the Centre for Sustainable Corporate Management (ZNU) will examine the complexity of a wide range of sustainability challenges across the supply chain such as, for example, the climate, packaging, food losses and human rights. The innovation summit, Newtrition X, will be addressing topics of change and will provide insights into new cognitions regarding personalised diets.

The Federal Government is also supporting the re-start of trade fairs. With the aid of the new funding programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), small and medium-sized companies based in Germany will receive financial support in participating at leading international trade fairs in Germany - hence also at Anuga. The aim of this programme is to support the marketing of innovative products, processes and services as efficiently as possible to open up export markets. The funding comprises of a subsidy towards the costs for stand rental and stand construction of up to Euros 12,500.

Delicatessen, gourmet and basic foodstuffs – Anuga Fine Food unites a diversified offer from all over the globe

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

The largest trade show of Anuga is betting on trends such as gourmet foods, superfoods and halal.

When it comes down to the quality of the products, as the most important platform for the manufacturers of delicatessen, Anuga Fine Food is a central point of contact for the manufacturers and importers of delicatessen and their customers from the food trade and food service sector. The largest of the Anuga trade shows unites a comprehensive and diversified offer from all over the globe. Numerous nations take part here at joint pavilions, which present the typical food and regional specialities of their home country.

In total, 420 exhibitors from 59 countries will present their variety of products and innovations at Anuga in Halls 1, 2.1, 3.1, 10.2 and 11 this year. The most important exhibitors include Develey, Feinkost Dittmann, Nestle Italiana, Newlat, Saclá, Seeberger, Seitenbacher and the VOG AG. In spite of the ongoing Corona pandemic, Anuga Fine Food also has a very international alignment in 2021. The countries represented include among others Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Dubai, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Thailand, Tunisia and the USA.

Cross-cutting issues such as halal, superfoods or gourmet foods are also covered by Anuga Fine Food. For example the "Anuga Halal Market" will also be on-site again at Anuga 2021. It offers a wide spectrum of halal-certified products for the food trade, which spans all trade shows. The current food trend towards gourmet food and speciality foods, which excels above all with its quality and transparency, is reflected at the largest trade show of Anuga. Many manufacturers are correspondingly pushing the transparency of their ingredients. In addition to the taste and quality of the products, this aims to also highlight the efforts regarding their uniqueness, sustainability as well as locally or regionally produced food and beverages.

Digital, named-day-only tickets are now available to order in the form of QR codesfrom the Ticket Shop on the Anuga website. Combined with the required recognised digital proof of full vaccination, testing or recovery, these measures ensure a safe trade fair experience for everyone.

Early online registration on an individual basis enables traceability in the event of a coronavirus infection. It also means that ticket desks will not be required on the trade fair grounds, and hence participants will not have to wait at the entrances. The entire process is clearly set out on the Anuga website. Click here for tickets and admission regulations.

Tickets:

Vaccinated, recovered or tested: the principle for safe access
Safety trumps everything: Those wishing to participate in Anuga 2021 must have either been fully vaccinated, recovered from COVID-19 within a minimum of 28 days and a maximum of six months, or received a recent negative test result (from a test taken within the last 48 hours for antigen tests or the last 72 hours for PCR tests). The “vaccinated, recovered or tested” principle applies to all trade fair participants.

The EU Digital COVID Certificate (DCC), issued by EU member states, is accepted as digital proof of vaccination. The certificate contains a QR code, which can be stored in various smartphone apps – in Germany, the CovPass app or the Corona-Warn app, for instance. Further information on the EU DCC and the apps that can display the certificate is available here: https://bit.ly/3jQZhA2

Trade fair participants who do not have direct access to a digital COVID certificate that meets the EU DCC standard can obtain a QR code by taking a test at any participating test centre that issues EU DCC QR codes in any EU member state or in Cologne before visiting the trade fair grounds.

NEWTRITION X. at Anuga: Personalised Nutrition in practice

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

The third edition of NEWTRITION X., the event all about Personalised Nutrition, will this year be held as a hybrid event alongside the world's leading trade fair for food and beverages

After it was put on hold last year as a result of the pandemic, foodRegio e.V. will host the third edition of NEWTRITION X together with Anuga. Innovation Summit as a hybrid offering in Cologne on 12 October 2021. The one-day event, which was already part of the Anuga Congress programme in 2019, will address decision-makers from the food industry, nutrition and retail trade, working in the fields of innovation, business development, nutrition, health and wellbeing. With its motto “Personalised Nutrition in practice”, the focus will be firmly on the practical implementation of related concepts within the food and drink industry. Attendees can look forward to a varied programme of nine presentations from speakers renowned in their fields.

Peter Heshof, from BLOOM trend and marketing agency, will be the keynote speaker. Addressing the question “What do consumers want next?”, he will talk about the most relevant food trends, and explore the potential for the personalised nutrition sector. He’ll also explain the developments relating to his proprietary ‘zeitgeist’ model, demonstrating that food trends are no coincidence but rather driven by the fixed cycle of the zeitgeist – the dominant mentality in society.

One thing of which today’s consumers are convinced is the notion: “I am Different”, hence the demand for customised and personalised solutions will continue to grow. Peter Heshof will talk about the opportunities for business and brands, and give some inspiration as to how to turn the most recent scientific findings into appealing, consumer-oriented concepts. “For big companies, it is hard to make a million personalised products. But what they can do is to create a million personalised advices and indicate which existing products work best. Food companies should therefore work together with distinguished companies from the ecosystem of Personalised Nutrition to help them innovate and ensure they are future-proof,” he says.

Sergej Vdovitchenko will use the Innovation Summit as a platform to introduce the first direct-to-consumer food webshop that uses Personalised Nutrition as a guiding principle. The shop “My Healthy Food” aims to combine the benefits of biodiversity through functional ingredients with the world of Personalised Nutrition, and increasing consumer demand for healthier and life-enhancing food.

Key topics are health prevention, sports and active nutrition, as well as weight management. Following an AI-driven approach based on an individual’s microbiome, the webshop guides consumers towards healthier food choices and enables them to make decisions based on what is best for their own particular metabolism. Plus, the webshop acts as a platform for customers to share their experiences and stories relating to “My Healthy Food” products, thus demonstrating the long-term purpose and mission of this project.

“My Healthy Food” focuses on balancing and combining the best elements of the “new” and the “old” for optimal results. For example, in terms of tradition, this involves the use of ancient and rare grains, and centuries-old methods such as fermention, while incorporating modern technologies such as microbiome and nutrigenomics research. In this respect, “My Healthy Food” works closely with the GoodMills Group, with their innovative ingredients available in the online store and for purchase by manufacturers.

Between the presentations, there are breaks scheduled for networking and Q&A sessions; the realisation of networking opportunities, however, will be subject to latest corona regulations. For further information, visit: https://www.newtritionx.com/en

Anuga Meat with trends and new products on the themes meat, sausages and poultry

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

New "Meet more Meatless" section with innovative meat substitute products places focus on the food transformation.

With its international offer, Anuga Meat is the most comprehensive information and ordering platform worldwide for meat, sausage, game and poultry. It covers the entire spectrum of meat production in its various processing stages. The product range spans from unprocessed meat products, to meat preparations and convenience products, through to fine sausage and ham products as well as regional specialities. Even if this year's Anuga Meat doesn't quite match the usual scope of international exhibitors due to the pandemic, the trade fair of the meat industry is well represented with suppliers from over 30 countries.

The international meat industry is currently having to face diverse challenges: In addition to COVID-19, discussions about the working conditions in the meat factories and animal welfare, the African swine fever, price volatility as well as a radical change in eating culture through to the reduction in the consumption of meat are causing new problems. The latter aspect is also being reflected at Anuga Meat. In addition to the classic suppliers of meat, sausages and poultry, the trade fair also offers insights into the latest trends and innovations in the meat substitute segment.

The traditional meat and sausage producers are represented both physically and digitally by among others, BRF, Citterio, Elpozo and Tönnies. The most important group stands on-site include Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the USA. Further renowned exhibitors have already announced their digital participation at Anuga @home.

Since more consumers are paying attention to food produced in a healthy and sustainable manner, substitute foods and ingredients are on the rise. Alternative sources of protein are one of the most important sections here. Health remains the number one reason for buying meat substitutes according to Innova Market Insights’ consumer research. The search for alternative proteins has resulted in the introduction of more and more novel products onto the market. These include plant-based protein sources, insects as well as lab-cultured meat. In order to do justice to these developments, the new section "Meet more Meatless" within Anuga Meat will place the focus on meat alternatives and substitute products. Among others the exhibitors include Meatless Farm, Phuture Foods, Planterra and Vivera.

Anuga Meat is being staged in Halls 5.2, 6 and 9 of the Cologne fair grounds.

The export business continues to be of central importance for the international meat industry. Tapping into new market potential is particularly important here. With Anuga's hybrid format, in addition to a physical presence, the leading global trade fair for food and beverages additionally offers the exhibitors of Anuga Meat the possibility of using a digital Showroom on Anuga @home to enable them to attain a greater reach and generate new contacts.

The physical version of Anuga is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from 09.-13.10.2021. The digital event Anuga @home is available from 11.-13.10.2021. Exclusively trade visitors are granted access.

Anuga Dairy well-aligned

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

Dairies use the leading global trade fair for food and beverages for the restart - increased focus on dairy alternatives

Under the roof of Anuga, the trade fair Anuga Dairy is the leading international trade fair for the milk and dairy industry. With a view to the coming edition of the leading global trade fair, Anuga is already recording good registration figures. The industry is optimistically looking ahead to the trade fair autumn and is looking forward to the restart.

The broad participation of the dairies is particularly pleasing, because they are optimistically looking ahead to Anuga 2021. On board at the fair grounds in Cologne in Hall 10.1 are among others : BMI – Bayrische Milchindustrie EG, DMK Deutsches Milchkontor, Emmi, FrieslandCampina, Garmo AG, Goldsteig, Heinrichsthaler Milchwerke GmbH, Hochwald Food GmbH, Hoogwegt Group B.V., IN.AL.PI.. SpA, Lacrima Dairy Industry Ltd., Lactalis Deutschland GmbH, Milcobel CVBA, and the private dairy Naarmann.

The most important group stands include Fokus Milch GmbH, Switzerland Global Enterprise and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.

With a view to the key theme “Transform”, Anuga is dedicating special attention to the “Dairy Alternatives”, the so-called milk alternatives, this year.   Plant-based milk alternatives have been enjoying rapid market growth for several years. According to the statistics, the worldwide market of alternative dairy products is expected to reach a market volume of around US Dollars 34.6 billion by the year 2029, according to a forecast. . Especially milk and dairy products based on plants such as soya, oats, almonds and co. are popular among the consumers. In addition to milk, yoghurt or puddings, more and more plant-based cheese alternatives are establishing themselves. Alongside new players on the market, the traditional dairy industry is taking advantage of this market opportunity and is developing new, high-quality trend brands. For example, over the past years more and more milk alternatives and young brands like Simply V, Happy Cheeze or Jogurty Magda Sp. z o.o. have earned themselves a fixed place in the refrigerated section.

In addition to the physical product presentation, the exhibitors of the Anuga Dairy will also showcase their products in their showrooms in the scope of the digital platform, Anuga @home.

The physical version of Anuga is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from 09.-13.10.2021. The digital event Anuga @home is available from 11.-13.10.2021. Exclusively trade visitors are granted access.

Top buyers are firmly planning to visit Anuga

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

Physical trade fair encounter remains to be the most important marketing tool

The prospects for this year's Anuga are very promising: Exhibitors from 94 countries, Corona-conform fully-booked fair grounds and the commitment of top international buyers to visit Anuga in Cologne from 9 to 13 October 2021. The world's largest trade fair for food and beverages is thus underlining its outstanding international significance as the leading global business platform and driving force for a successful post-Corona era. Furthermore, Anuga 2021 is treading new paths and will be staged as a hybrid format for the first time. Namely, the physical trade fair will be additionally enhanced by the digital element Anuga@home.

A current visitor survey on Anuga carried out among over 4,000 top buyers worldwide shows: There is no way around Anuga 2021. 88 percent of the survey respondents are planning to visit Anuga in October, 54 percent of whom intend to exclusively participate physically, whereas 34 percent are going to engage in a mixture between a personal and digital participation. Over 80 percent of the buyers stated that they are looking forward to finally being able to visit physical trade fairs like Anuga again and 73 percent are totally convinced that visiting physical trade fairs is necessary in the food and beverage section and that they are irreplaceable. Correspondingly, 85 percent stated that their product procurement was dependent on trade fairs. 87 percent of the survey respondents are thus also not considering reducing their number of trade fair visits. Only 6 percent are not planning to physically visit trade fairs in 2021.

International industry players also emphasised the importance Anuga has for the food and beverage industry in the scope of the trade fair campaign "Meet our Visitor". For further information see: https://bit.ly/3hnLQ9C

To ensure they are optimally prepared for Anuga 2021, the visitors will receive extensive information on the themes arrival, hotel reservations, hygiene and safety at the fair grounds, booking tickets and access in the run-up to the trade fair. Koelnmesse will strictly limit access to all events in the trade fair autumn of 2021 - from the build up over the days of the trade fair, through to the dismantling - down to persons who are fully-vaccinated or have recovered from the virus no longer than six months ago and those who have a current, negative test. This "3G" principle, the observance of which will be strictly monitored, applies for all exhibitors, visitors and all further persons involved. Details on the on-site process will be announced in due time before Anuga.

Furthermore the #B-SAFE4business concept developed by Koelnmesse in close coordination with the authorities is continuously reviewed and adapted to the current legal situation and applicable regulations. Here, digital technologies play an important role in the observance of the Corona protection measures at Anuga 2021. These include for instance personalised, digital tickets or the contactless access controls, through to body scanners in the entrance areas.

Anuga goes hybrid and is lending the leading global trade fair for food and beverages a stronger presence on the web with its new format Anuga @home

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

Product presentations at the exhibitions stands on-site will be enhanced by further digital offers via the new Anuga @home

"Transform" is the major leading theme of this year's Anuga. Whereby not only themes related to the transformation within the food and beverage industry will be addressed, but also the new concepts of the leading global trade fair itself, which is being staged in a hybrid format for the first time. Accordingly, the usual physical trade fair with product presentations on-site in Cologne will be additionally enhanced by the digital element Anuga @home.

The hybrid format has the advantage that industry participants all over the globe – exhibitors, trade visitors and the trade press – can exchange ideas live in Cologne or digitally via the newly developed platform and inform themselves about important industry topics. As a result of the analogue trade fair being enhanced by the digital platform, a new, hybrid trade fair experience will be created, wherever the key players, decision-makers and other relevant target groups happen to be.

Digital tools for maximum reach
The digital event Anuga @home offers the exhibitors various presentation options. The platform is accessed via the virtual lobby. Here, there is an overview of all features as well as initial recommendations for relevant contacts, exhibitors and imminent items on the trade fair agenda.

Furthermore, the platform offers additional components such as the "Main Stages", where the programme curated by Anuga takes place. For example, top speakers will present industry themes – live on-site from Cologne or per stream from everywhere in the world – via the "Congress Stages". The exhibitors' new products and highlights will be presented on the "Product Stages". Here, there will also be further target group-specific stages, for instance the "Anuga Trade Shows Stage", the "Anuga Start-up Stage", the "Anuga taste Innovation Stage" or the "Anuga Food Trends Stage".

In the Exhibitors and Products section, the "Showfloor" serves as the counterpart to the exhibition hall. From here access to the different stands of the exhibitors, the so-called "Showroom", is possible. Exhibitors can provide relevant information about their companies, products and services in the Showroom. Visitors, other exhibitors, top decision-makers, buyers, industry experts and media representatives can be contacted via the "Communication Centre" per audio, video or chat in the form of a one-to-one communication. The visual "Discovery Graph" makes identifying relevant contacts and companies incredibly easy and interactive – either via the networks, personal contacts or using the Match feature based on the interests entered.

The trade fair team will carry out among others webinars with live demonstrations in the coming weeks in order to present the functionality and possibilities of the digital platform. The visitors will be able to access the live programme of Anuga @home from 11.10.-13.10.2021. After this date, the contents can be called up on-demand. Access to the networking options is also possible after the actual trade fair has closed.

Anuga and THAIFEX-Anuga Asia join forces for digital offers

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

The temporal proximity of both trade fairs is creating new opportunities for business networking and digital sourcing

Both this year's Anuga (9 to 13 October) and the newly scheduled THAIFEX-Anuga Asia (29 September to 3 October) are very well-positioned so far. Whereas the world's largest trade fair for food and beverages is currently recording a high number of bookings, comparable with the previous event, more than 70% of the previous exhibitors have already registered for Asia's most important F&B trade fair. Both trade fairs are planned in a hybrid format. Accordingly, the usual physical trade fair will be additionally enhanced by digital services. In addition to participating at the physical event, which makes a strong market penetration and a personal exchange, which is particularly important in the international context, possible, as well as the temporal proximity it is precisely these additional digital offers that lend the two trade fairs connecting factors and numerous synergies, which in turn offer the exhibitors an attractive participation package.

"One of the positive outcomes of the pandemic is that we have created new, digital solutions at top speed, which provide our customers with the best possible offer to suit their specific interests. Not only that the exhibitors can physically take part in the one event and virtually in the other, the visitors also benefit from two powerful event platforms, which enable them to make use of the contents of both ANUGA and THAIFEX-Anuga Asia," explained Anne Schumacher, Vice President Food and Food Technology, Koelnmesse GmbH.

In this way, Thai exporters can already take off with the THAIFEX Virtual Trade Show (VTS) in May in the scope of "Hybrid+", the new, expanded format of the THAIFEX-Anuga Asia - a 365-day initiative of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP). Beyond this, Asia's most important F&B trade fair is planning to introduce a series of further digital initiatives for all participants by the new exhibition dates, including online matchmaking and webinar sessions.

The new, digital offer "Anuga @home" will also attract additional reach in terms of the exhibitors and visitors of both trade fairs. Anuga customers as well as people interested in THAIFEX-Anuga Asia will thus be able to make use of further digital services and virtual programme items such as panel discussions, digital exhibitor showrooms, networking and live streams. In addition, contents of THAIFEX-Anuga Asia can also be made accessible to the Anuga participants via Anuga @home as a co-sharing platform. In this way, with its global focus Anuga above all offers access to a wide range of markets throughout the world, whereas in the case of THAIFEX-Anuga Asia the focus lies on the Asiatic market. What's more, the interlinking of the digital offers creates further matchmaking and networking options, which particularly generates new points of contact and further business potential for international buyers.

Frozen Food Day: Anuga Frozen Food with innovative frozen products and new trends

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

Shock-frozen food is still very popular with the consumers – convenience and plant-based products gain in significance

6 March 2021 is Frozen Food Day. Frozen food was born 91 years ago in ten food stores of the small city Springfield in the US State of Massachusetts. It was possible to purchase frozen food such as vegetables, fruit and fish here for the first time. The trick implemented here was so-called shock-freezing, which is still the gentlest method of conservation today, because it completely does without preservatives. In 1984, the American President, Ronald Reagan, launched the "Frozen Food Day" to pay tribute to the services of the frozen food industry in the USA. In the meantime, this culinary day of honour pays tribute to frozen food worldwide, also in Germany.

Anuga played a key role in the theme frozen food from the very start, because in 1955 this was where frozen products were presented to a wide audience outside of the USA for the first time. And at this year's Anuga, which is being staged from 9 to 13 October 2021, the frozen food industry will once again be presenting the industry's most important new products at Anuga Frozen Food. The frozen food segment is one of the key innovation drivers both for the retail trade and the out-of-home market.

Numerous international suppliers will be presenting the complete international spectrum of products, fields of application and services at the coming Anuga. The demand is unabatedly high. To-date the following exhibitors have already confirmed their participation at the trade fair: 11er Nahrungsmittel, Agrarfrost, Alfa Athanasios, Arabatzis Michail, Ardo, Aviko, Crop’s, Erlenbacher, G7, Greenyard Frozen, Neuhauser, Pfalzgraf, Roncadin, Surgital, Viciunai and the Virto Group. The most important group participations include Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey and Russia.

The offer ranges from fish and meat, to frozen bread and bakery products, through to fruit and vegetables as well as ready-made meals in different portions and sizes. Anuga Frozen Food is one of Anuga's largest trade fairs and unites the frozen food industry with the trade and the out-of-home market, because the frozen food segment is one of the most important trendsetters here. The frozen food industry is placing its bets on the transition towards resource-saving and sustainable food and in this connection is relying on the leading theme of this year's Anuga: "Transform" . The manufacturers are not as successful at continually developing new products and improved and simpler solutions that are more convenient for the consumers in hardly any other segment. Due to the pandemic, several suppliers are currently having to adapt their offers in line with the new demands of the consumers and other forms of meals. For example, due to the higher usage of home offices, convenience products are gaining increased significance. However, here the consumers are increasingly paying more attention to the ingredients, because they want to eat healthy and sustainable products. Furthermore, plant-based frozen products are an important trend. But classics such as frozen pizzas are still as reliable and popular as before.

Anuga Frozen Food 2021 is once again being supported by the German Frozen Food Institute, dti, which has been the exclusive partner of the trade fair since 2013. dti will provide important information, data and facts on the frozen food market at the trade fair and via its digital counterpart, Anuga @home. As every year, the highlight will be the TIEFKÜHL-STAR-NIGHT, which will take place in the Kristallsaal at the fair grounds of Koelnmesse on 11 October 2021.

The German frozen food market
Today, one can't imagine daily food provision without frozen food: Almost every household (97.5 percent*) buys and appreciates frozen products. With over 17,000 frozen items on the retail market, there is a wide spectrum of products. The annual per capita consumption in Germany is in the meantime around 47 kilogrammes. This is a quantum leap compared to 1960 when the average per capita consumption was 800 grammes (Source German Frozen Food Institute e.V.).
