With its key theme "Transform" Anuga 2021 is placing the focus on food transformation

New congress and event formats are picking up on mega trends such as sustainability, health, convenience and digitalisation

COVID-19 is having a sustainable impact on peoples' lives and has clearly demonstrated that changes can occur suddenly and bring about strong effects. The pandemic is having a magnifying glass effect and is revealing the health policy, economic and social weak spots. Furthermore, it is not only illustrating the volatility of the global food and ecosystem that was already visible before COVID-19, but is once again underlining the necessity for global change. A representative survey carried out among the exhibitors and visitors of Anuga 2019, in which 60 percent stated that the industry is facing significant change, also confirms this. It is no longer purely about how to feed the approx. 10 billion people in the future, but how a sustainable food transformation can be achieved with the aid of digitalisation and technological progress and with regards to the climate-related challenges.

The organisers of Anuga are aware of this transition and are thus placing the focus on food transformation this year in the scope of their key topic "Transform". The largest trade fair for food and beverages worldwide sees itself as an international business network and central communication platform, which is actively accompanying the transformation process and supporting the industry in securing and maintaining economic success.

"We are not only observing how the implementation of the food transformation is occurring within the agricultural sector, in the production of food and beverages or in the global supply and value chains, it is also demanding a new approach with regards to eating habits and consumer behaviour. On top of this there are additional current challenges such as export and travel restrictions, the increased demand for products that are beneficial to health, the virtual standstill in the out-of-home market as well as an area of tension between different systems, for example globalisation versus deglobalisation or convenience versus sustainability and zero waste. Anuga 2021 will offer new formats here, which will make the many transformation processes visible," explained Stefanie Mauritz, Director Anuga.

In addition to the 10 trade shows, the already announced, new, digital platform, Anuga@home, which is enhancing the physical trade in 2021 and thus providing a hybrid format, will tread new paths and provide further inspiration. This gives the customers of Anuga the option to participate even without physically visiting the trade fair. From panel discussions, to online seminars, corporate and product presentations, through to the virtual café, there is something for everyone. This results in a platform on which experts and decision-makers from the most varied sections can come together to discuss and instigate new, sustainable avenues for the food and beverage industry.

Food trends and focus themes
The transformation process of the industry is particularly reflected in the food trends and focus themes of Anuga 2021. This demonstrates that the food and beverage industry is encountering the challenges of the transformation with new approaches and innovative products. The mega trends include the themes sustainability, health and digitalisation, which was also confirmed by a representative survey of the exhibitors and visitors of Anuga 2019. The additional food trends include alternative meat proteins, clean label, convenience & snacking, free from & health foods, plant-based proteins or foods, superfoods & ancient grains as well as sustainably produced or packaged and focus themes like halal, kosher, gourmet & speciality foods and private label.

New congress and specialised event formats
"Transform" will also be visible within the congress and event programme of Anuga 2021. In the scope of the Anuga debut of the New Food Conference organised by ProVeg under the motto "Plant-based meets cellular agriculture" as well as the continuation of the innovation summit "Newtrition X - personalised diets", together with foodregio the focus will be placed on sustainable and health-promoting food.

Furthermore, the new, special format "Anuga Clean Label" does justice to the mega trend sustainability and the resulting growing demand for clean eating, the consumers' desire for healthy foods that are prepared naturally. Participating in the new special format, Anuga Clean Label, will allow the exhibitors to attract the increased attention of international buyers, who are looking for products from the non-GMO and natural section.

Anuga is additionally picking up on the second mega trend "Health" with its special format "Free From, Health & Functional". A participation here offers the buyer interested in trend products a targeted overview of this product range and at the same time provides the exhibitors of the trade fair with a focused stage for the placement of products with a health-oriented additional benefit.

Anuga 2021 well-positioned: Positive registration figures after early bird phase

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

The world's largest trade fair for food and beverages with a hybrid format for the first time - digital Anuga@home to enhance the physical platform

Ten months before the event begins, very good registration figures have been recorded for the coming Anuga in Cologne from 9 to 13 October 2021. After the expiry of the early bird phase, the largest trade fair for food and beverages worldwide has already recorded a similar number of bookings as for the previous event. For the successful Anuga concept "10 trade shows under one roof" this means that eight of the ten trade shows are already completely fully booked now. More applications have been currently received than can be accommodated on the surfaces available. Overall, exhibitors from 83 countries have registered so far. Furthermore, Anuga 2021 is treading new paths and will be staged as a hybrid format for the first time. Accordingly, the usual physical trade fair will be additionally enhanced by the digital element Anuga@home. This format ensures that industry participants from around the world – exhibitors, trade visitors and the trade press – can exchange ideas live in Cologne or digitally via a newly developed platform and inform themselves about important industry topics." The concrete form will evolve over the next months.

"These developments are making us feel very positive and confirm the central significance Anuga plays as the international industry meeting point of the year for the food and beverage industry. The current coverage on the vaccinations is also giving us confidence that Anuga will take place in a physical form in 2021. Naturally, we will continue to anticipate all eventualities and will plan the trade fair under Corona conditions with the aid of our hygiene and safety concept #B-safe4Business, i.e. aisles double the width and minimum distances of 1.5 m. Even if the coming Anuga will no doubt take on a slightly different appearance compared to the previous years, the good booking status is proving that the industry wants a physical trade fair and that the need for a personal exchange and the desire for product innovations is greater than ever. A digital format is important, can however at the most constitute an enhancement rather than an adequate replacement," explained Stefanie Mauritz, Director Anuga.

"10 trade shows under one roof": The established concept of Anuga will once again in 2021 ensure a good overview and a well-arranged layout divided up into themed areas. Important industry players are already on the registration list for Anuga. The applications received so far according to the respective trade shows include:

The latter will also be a theme at the already announced New Food Conference, which is being organised jointly with ProVeg during Anuga.

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – September 17, 2025 – The events of September 11, 2001, resonated around the world. In the days that followed, BMW of North America transformed compassion into action—supporting first responders, honoring a beloved colleague, and reinforcing its commitment to resilience and community care.

A clear September morning

At BMW’s Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey headquarters—about 25 miles from the World Trade Center—employees began a routine workday under a brilliant blue sky. Tom Plucinsky, then General Manager of BMW Motorcycles, recalls the calm that preceded an unimaginable day.

Honoring Linda Gronlund

The loss was deeply personal. Linda Gronlund, BMW’s Environmental Compliance Manager, was aboard United Flight 93. Her dedication to her work and the environment lives on through a scholarship supporting female engineering students and a memorial at BMW’s headquarters.

Immediate community support

BMW moved quickly to help. The company donated $1 million to the City of New York and the American Red Cross, and provided $2.4 million in vehicles to aid recovery and relief efforts—focused on getting vital resources to first responders and affected communities when they needed it most.

A rolling symbol of unity

At the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, BMW created a one-of-a-kind X5 featuring an American flag design. The vehicle toured parades and public events nationwide, becoming a visible tribute to unity and resilience.

Racing for a cause

BMW’s Team PTG competed at the 2001 Petit Le Mans with a patriotic American flag livery—and won. The victory offered a meaningful moment of pride and perseverance for fans and communities across the country.

A lasting legacy

BMW’s response to 9/11 reflects a culture of empathy and proactive support—turning grief into ongoing community engagement, hope, and a legacy that continues to inspire.
