Los Angeles – October 19, 2026 -- Hollywood Park Casino, a 24-hour poker and dining venue within walking distance of SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome, is marking 10 years in its current building with an anniversary celebration running October 17–24.

Big Game LXI and LA28 put the neighborhood in focus

SoFi Stadium will host The Big Game LXI on February 14, 2027. LA28's Inglewood zone will host swimming, basketball, the Olympic and Paralympic opening ceremonies, and the Main Press Center. The 300-room Kali Hotel, now under development at Hollywood Park, will add overnight accommodation nearby.

Christopher Meany, executive managing director of Hollywood Park Casino Company, LLC, said the casino was an early investment in the idea that an entertainment district needs places people return to between its biggest events.

Skateboarder Hits 94.34 mph, Breaking Guinness Speed Record

Quebec – October 19, 2026 -- Diego Poncelet Sanchez-Cuenca has ridden a downhill skateboard at 94.34 mph (151.83 km/h), making the 27-year-old from Spain and Switzerland the fastest downhill skateboarder in history. The run took place on Route du Port in Les Éboulements, Quebec, on the same slope where the previous Guinness World Record was set nine years ago.

Poncelet beat a 2017 mark of 91.17 mph

On the afternoon of Sept. 22, with a Guinness judge watching, the two-time World Champion passed the 2017 record of 91.17 mph (143.73 km/h). That mark belonged to his late friend Pete Connolly of England, who also rode on Seismic Skate Systems wheels. Red Bull filmed the run and published the video on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube on Oct. 15, 2026.

Many elite downhill skaters had considered 150 km/h out of reach. Guinness World Records adjudicator Andrew Glass called the run "one of the most impressive feats I have ever seen."

What Cockroach Droppings Can Tell You About Hidden Pests

Syracuse – October 19, 2026 -- Tiny dark specks in your kitchen cabinets may be more than dirt: a new HelloNation article explains that cockroach droppings are often among the first visible signs of an infestation.

The piece draws on insights from Kelly Aldrich of All Pest of Syracuse LLC. Because cockroaches typically hide during the day in dark, secluded areas, homeowners and renters may never see the insects themselves. The evidence they leave behind can offer the first clues.

Droppings look like pepper, coffee grounds, or small pellets

Smaller cockroach species often leave tiny dark specks that resemble black pepper, coffee grounds, or grains of dirt. Larger species may produce small cylindrical pellets. People commonly mistake these for dirt, food particles, or household debris, which can let an infestation continue unnoticed for long periods.

Teens Are Beating Social Media Bans. Experts Say Don't Close the Loopholes

Australia – October 19, 2026 -- A study published this year found that four in five Australian teens under 16 got onto platforms barred by the country's 2024 social media ban. In an opinion piece, researchers Michal Luria, Aliya Bhatia and Danah Boyd argue that tightening enforcement would make kids and adults less safe online.

Bans are spreading, and so are workarounds

France joined Australia in July by barring under-15s from major platforms, though the country's top court blocked the ban on human rights grounds. The UK aims to bar under-16s in early 2027, and the EU has announced its own plan for under-15s. Teens in Australia have used a sibling's face for ID checks and even drawn fake facial hair.

Retinal Implant PRIMA Helps AMD Patients Read Again

California – October 19, 2026 -- A retinal implant paired with camera-equipped glasses has helped more than 80% of recipients with advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) read, do crosswords, and use their phones after training. The PRIMA system was approved in Europe in July and is awaiting FDA clearance in the US.

PRIMA targets geographic atrophy, which affects more than 5 million people

Geographic atrophy is an advanced form of AMD in which retinal cells die off and leave a blind spot in the center of vision. Until now, no treatment could restore that lost sight. Science Corporation, based in California, developed PRIMA for these patients.

Can Fighting Arctic Fires Keep Frozen Carbon Locked Away?

Fairbanks – October 19, 2026 -- Researchers in the US and Canada are studying whether detecting and putting out remote Arctic fires faster could keep permafrost carbon in the ground. Woodwell Climate Research Center, the University of Victoria's Polis Institute for Ecological Governance and the nonprofit Alaska Venture Fund are now partnering on a multimillion-dollar initiative called North Fire to study these interventions and raise public awareness of them.

A metal probe shows how fast thaw follows a fire

Near Fairbanks, scientists from the Alaska Fire Science Consortium used a T-shaped thaw probe at the site of the 2021 Yankovich Road Fire. Outside the burn scar, the probe hit frozen ground about a foot down. Where the fire had burned off the insulating moss and topsoil, it sank at least three times deeper.

Palm Beach Wine Dinners: Lafite, Harlan and a 12-Seat Opus One

Palm Beach – October 19, 2026 -- Florie's by Mauro Colagreco at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach is hosting eight wine dinners from October 2026 through May 2027, with most seatings limited to 24 guests and the Opus One finale capped at just 12.

Each evening pairs a curated flight of wines with a four-course menu created by Chef Mauro Colagreco. He builds every menu around the origin, character and story of the featured wine. Guests start with a welcome pour and canapés on Florie's terrace, then sit together in the Private Dining Room.

Colagreco described the approach as starting with the wine and creating a menu that responds to it, so guests can discover a terroir through the eyes of the people who bring it to life.
