SHERIDAN, WYOMING – November 18, 2024 – The Ahr Valley, a picturesque wine region in Germany, is renowned for producing exceptional wines, particularly Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Recently, a distinguished panel of experts gathered to honor the very best of these wines, awarding the prestigious title of "Ahrwines of the Year."

A Toast to Quality and Passion

The "Ahrwines of the Year" competition is a unique event that highlights the dedication, passion, and exceptional quality found in the Ahr Valley winemaking community. This year's winners were met with enthusiastic praise from the jury, led by renowned wine journalist and author Carsten Henn.

The accolades were effusive:

"A wine to kneel for."

"A wine like a ballet performance."

"A wine monument for the Ahr Valley."

These glowing descriptions speak to the exceptional caliber of the wines produced in this remarkable region.

Diversity and Distinction

The six winning wines represent a diverse range of producers, from renowned VDP estates to smaller family-run vineyards. This diversity underscores the Ahr Valley's commitment to both tradition and innovation in winemaking.

Spätburgunder: The Star of the Ahr Valley

The Ahr Valley is characterized by its steep, terraced vineyards and a cool climate that is particularly well-suited to the Spätburgunder grape. This variety accounts for approximately 65% of the region's 550 hectares of vineyards, making it a dominant force in the competition.

This year's Spätburgunder winners include:

  • VDP Estate Nelles (Heimersheim) in the "Cult Wine" category
  • VDP Estate Meyer-Näkel (Dernau) in the "Premium" category
  • Weingut Peter Lingen (Bad Neuenahr)

Beyond Spätburgunder: Exploring Frühburgunder and Blanc de Noir

While Spätburgunder reigns supreme, the Ahr Valley also boasts Frühburgunder, a rare mutation of Spätburgunder known for its fruit-forward wines. The VDP Estate Deutzerhof (Mayschoß) took home the top prize in this category.

The Ahr Valley also demonstrates its versatility with Blanc de Noir, a white wine made from red Spätburgunder grapes. The VDP Estate Burggarten (Heppingen) claimed the top spot for its exceptional Blanc de Noir.

A Unique and Comprehensive Wine Prize

The "Ahrwine of the Year" is not just a testament to the quality of Ahr Valley wines; it is also Germany's only state-recognized wine prize open to all wineries in the region. This unique distinction provides consumers with a comprehensive guide to the diverse and exceptional wines of the Ahr Valley.
