Iceland Implements Innovative Vacuum Packaging to Combat Food Waste and Plastic Pollution

Submitted by J. Mikhail on

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – August 10, 2024 – Iceland Foods, a prominent UK supermarket chain, is set to launch its pioneering vacuum-packed mince range across its national network of stores following a successful 12-week trial period. This strategic initiative aims to significantly reduce food waste and plastic pollution through the implementation of a novel packaging solution designed to extend the shelf life of both beef and pork mince products.

The airtight vacuum packaging is projected to increase the shelf life of beef mince by an estimated 50%, effectively mitigating food spoilage and waste. This innovation not only provides consumers with enhanced product longevity but also aligns with Iceland's commitment to environmental stewardship by reducing plastic waste by an estimated 35 tonnes annually.

Furthermore, the space-efficient design of the new packaging facilitates increased transportation and storage efficiency, resulting in a reduced carbon footprint due to fewer required truckloads.

Zach Nowell, Category Buying Manager for Fresh Meat and Poultry at Iceland Foods, stated, "We are continually striving to deliver superior products to our customers while remaining attentive to their priorities. Our new vacuum-packed beef mince ensures that our customers receive the same high-quality product they appreciate, but with an extended shelf life. We are also proud to be the first UK supermarket to introduce this innovative packaging for pork mince."

Stuart Lendrum, Head of Product, Process and Sustainability at Iceland Foods, further emphasized the company's dedication to sustainability: "As we persist in minimizing Iceland's environmental impact through pioneering initiatives, this sustainable transition will yield a 50% reduction in plastic usage for our mince products, accompanied by a decrease in the number of transport vehicles on the road."

The new vacuum-packed mince range will be available in over 1,000 Iceland stores across the UK and through their online platform starting in August. This strategic move exemplifies Iceland's ongoing commitment to providing customers with sustainable and convenient options while proactively contributing to a more environmentally responsible future.
