SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Feb. 17, 2025 – Despite a challenging economic climate in Germany, the gardening industry demonstrated resilience in 2024, achieving a 1.3 percent growth in revenue, according to a report presented at the 24th IVG Media Day Garden.
Industry Experts Gather at IVG Media Day Garden
The annual IVG Media Day Garden, hosted by the Industrieverband Garten (IVG) e.V., took place on February 13, 2025, at the Koelnmesse in Cologne. The event brought together around 200 media representatives, industry experts, and gardening enthusiasts. Klaus Peter Teipel of klaus peter teipel research & consulting presented the key findings of the report, titled "2024: Garden and Leisure Defy the Persistently Difficult Consumer Climate!"
Gardening Proves Resilient in the Face of Economic Challenges
Teipel's analysis revealed that the German economy faced difficulties in 2024, with stagnant growth, high prices, and subdued consumer spending. Despite this, the gardening industry thrived, generating approximately 19.9 billion euros in revenue.
"These difficult conditions also affected the gardening market," Teipel acknowledged. "Nevertheless, it developed successfully against the trend and achieved a good result compared to other sectors."
Key Growth Areas and Future Outlook
The report highlighted specific segments within the gardening market that experienced significant growth. The biological-chemical sector saw a notable increase of 7.8 percent, while living green products also grew by 0.8 percent. However, hardware segments remained relatively stable.
Looking ahead to 2025, Teipel anticipates continued challenges but remains cautiously optimistic. "According to various economic research institutes, a strong economic recovery is not in sight for 2025," Teipel explained. "However, certain segments of private consumption will grow above average."
He predicts that consumer preferences for experience-oriented spending and sustainable products will benefit the gardening industry. "In 2025, I see the growth rate for the gardening market between 0.4 and 2.3 percent," Teipel stated.
Gardening's Enduring Appeal
The report emphasized the enduring popularity of gardening among consumers. "The garden continues to enjoy a high status among consumers and shows significantly less dependence on the economic situation compared to other industries," Teipel remarked. This suggests that even in times of economic uncertainty, gardening remains a beloved pastime and priority for many.
